Can someone tell me if the upper quinault is off the res? Whenever I hear of the quinault I hear talk of needing a tribal guide. I know the lower is on the res.

Nordic, I believe that the Upper Quinault is a combo of National Park and National Forest. It is definitely off the rez.

Nordic:

1. No guide needed.........

2. River has changes every year........area's that were boated in the past are now 100's of yards from the river.

3. For the above reason, many people have stopped fishing above the lake.

4. The country "views" are super......chance to see wildlife.......deer, elk, eagles........

5. Can be a real chance to get away from the "crammed rivers" in this part of the State.

If you decide to drift it I would suggest hiring someone to take you the first time.

I know of at least one split in the river that is a little decieving, You will want to take the skinny water and not the main river. The skinny channel takes you down a nice little chute and bypasses a logjam on the main channel.

River destroyed by October floods. Used to run "air clear" -not anymore--
Now if there is more than .5 in. of rain it is choco milk. Glaicer calved and landslide almost destroyed ONP lodge in upper basin.
