Does anyone have a recent report on the smelt jigging situation at Oak Harbor?

Earlier reports this winter said that it was absolutely dead. Has it gotten better recently?

OH is a long drive for me, and it would be a shame to drive that far just to exercise my wrist...

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Just buy some smelt at the store, unless, of course, you are a cheapskate.

(sorry, couldn't resist)

:p

I was up ther last Saturday, and the smelt were in thick. I was fishing along with 300 other people, and limits were coming easily. I only stayed about an hour, and caught as many as I felt like cleaning. IIRC I ended up with about 15-20 dozen. I averaged about 2-3 fish per attempt.

The average size was about 6" and quite a few were 8-9". I'd spend some time trying to find the rigs made by Gamakatsu. They don't have any beads. Just small silver hooks with a tiny bit of white plastic wings. They were working much better than anything else .

Does anyone know of any decent smelt fishing in the south sound areas, like marine areas 10, 11 and 13? I've not heard of any, just wondering.
