Fished from aberdeen to blue slough (app. three miles) for sturgeon today I was on the water for 3 hours seen one landed from the bank but I was not as lucky. Marked a few on the finder reports of a few caught it is improving.

What are you using for bait for sturgeon and also what other types of fishing are in there.

PT,

When I was a kid, neighbors told me that a rancid chicken that had been left too long in the fridge made good sturgeon bait on the lower Chehalis, but I've never verified that with Mr. Sturgeon himself.

There was a pulse of steelhead through the Chehalis over the last couple weeks that seems to have slown down as Aunty indicated. I would expect another push if this rain raises the river. When it begins to drop, I'll try to be there. There are public boat launches at Montesano, Fuller Bridge - just downstream of Elma, Porter, and Centralia. I think there's one at Oakville, but I haven't used it, so I'm not sure if it's a developed site or just a riverbank to launch from.

Good luck.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Ok next question how is the bank access anywhere on the river and which is better lower or upper parts. I will be staying in Elma so from there.

Thanks again.

There isn't much bank access on the Chehalis. For sturgeon you might want to try Friends Landing by Montesano.

It's a little more of a distance but go to the cosmopolis boat launch behind cheveron station incoming to right after high water seen a few pulled out of there recently, surf smelt are in the bay and the lower river. where ever you go bring railroad ties or lots of weights.

Ok I think I am going to try for the stugeon more just because I never have fished for them.

I thought I had gear I bought once but remembered I gave it to a friend long ago and can't think of what I had.

So here goes what size rod should I get whats to big and line type strength etc. and also reel. Should I use spinning or not(feel comfortable with spinning more than baitcast style).

Thanks agian for letting me pic your brains.

I hope this isn't a one time deal for you , or money isn't an issue. Baitcaster penn 320GTI 80lb tuff line 10ft. Ugly stick $90.00 for the reel and $70.00 for the rod. As far as the tackle goes the chevron station in cosi or any tackle shop locally (walmart) will set you up it's pretty basic. Spinning reels I'm not to sure of there are some big sturgeon in the challis so you need at least something that will hold 300 yards or better of 80lb tuffline.

eek Dang I didn't know there where that old of sturgeon in that system wow. hmm maybe should rethink and find someone in a boat lol. I have a good setup for halibut I can use if that would work from a boat in a river.

That setup would work from a boat for a one time deal. I would offer a seat for you but my time is restricted to 2hr fishing trips to aberdeen waiting time for daughter in college then its back to Westport. Tryed jigging for herring today no luck did see a ball of bait fish in the bay must of been 50 seals in it.They are close.
