I cannot decide what rod to get fro trout: I am going to use it for throwing spinners and floating powerbait off the bottom. The biggest fish would be around 16-18 inches with most 10-14 inches. There is a lot of information and i GREATLY appreciate the people who have the time to help me out with this! I have it narrowed down to a SR 720-2 and a SR 782-2. Here is the info and ratings for the 720: Length: 6' Power: 0 Pieces:2 When anglers asked for a two-piece version of our 720, we made it with GL3 graphite to keep it as light as possible without sacrificing durability. Just what the trout angler ordered: A softer rod that you can transport in your car or backpack, with unmatched sensitivity. 6' 1 - 4 1/32 - 1/8 Mod-Fast Ultra-Light And the 782: Length: 6'6" Power: 2 Pieces: 2 A good all-around spinning rod for big trout in smaller streams. Handles spinners and small lures extremely well. That makes it a nice small stream bass rod for canoeists and rafters, and the two-piece configuration makes it easy to store and transport. Plus it handles a nice range of line sizes for almost any spinning application. 6'6" 4 - 8 1/16 - 5/16 Fast Light

Finally, a topic that I can contribute to without feelin' stupid . Alright, if you want to spend a lot of money on a rod, then go ahead (nice rods are cool and I'd go with the longer one). But for trout, bass, etc. you don't have to. You will catch just as many fish with a $20 rod and reel combo. Take it from a guy that knows (don't make me brag :p ).

Well Brat, I'm sure the experts will guide you well as far as the rod. Alevin, I have spent too many days in Fred Meyer and am laughing at your post. I was just inquiring about a custom rod. but still feel if you can fish that any rod will do (no comments necessary). I showed up with first a clipped off trout pole for silvers, then got a big salmon rod, then went back to Fred Meyers for an emmergiency rod. Last guy I talked to said to get a shorter, lighter rod. There was no prices and I was anxious to fish. Took the gal an hour to get a price check on a 10 dollar trout rod. 65 she said. Even the guy in back of me groaned and said it was worth 6 bucks. My first silver was off of it. Glory day. Went down to the zipperlip and Codfather says "Oh, ya brought your trout rod!" Whatever, I knew no different and now am looking at good rods and still tell them that I caught lots of fish and never knew what kind of rod it was. Girls, go figure. Wishing you luck with the new rod, I'll probably never hit it on the head but the old reaL men can catch on just hooks!

This is the next trout/Panfish rod I am geting (soon) SR781-1 Length: 6'6" Power: 1 Pieces: 1 Spinning Soft enough to protect light line, yet subtly strong and responsive, this is a classic ultra-light trout rod. To make it as light as possible, we manufacture this rod only in IMX, giving it a lot of extra sensitivity. That makes it a good choice for deep-water crappie and white bass, as well as casting small spinners for trout. Extremely soft yet surprisingly powerful. Model Color Length Line Weight Lure Weight Action Power Handle Item# MSRP IMX 6'6" 2 - 6 1/32 - 3/16 Fast Ultra-Light 73 10236-01 I like the action of a one pice alot better.....Ross

I wouldn't take a loomis for free. The sooner people stop buying loomis, the sooner we see loomis rods come down to a fair market price, right around $89.00. That's the GL3 of course. I guess it's kind of like designer jeans. Sure Abercrombie jeans are cool, but are they any better than levi's? 150$ better?

brat, I agree with everything said above. Loomis rods are Rediculously expensive. Another thing is that when Swain's General Store in Sequim, PT, or PA has their rods on sale, all the rods are on sale except for Loomis because Loomis states in there contract with the dealer that the dealer can't sell loomis rods at a sale price or coupon price. Whoever came up with that is real ignorant or just really thinks way to highly of their product. No Pun intended, just think that the sales of Loomis Products could be manage a little better than that BS. Thats why I have a Rainshadow LoL!Oh, I too also catch just as many trout with a short 20 dollar poece of sh*t.
Well, no more of that, on to ur rod, yeah, I would go with a longer rod too. I would try to get something universal that u could use for Steelhead, trout, bass, anything except for salt. That would be a 9 plus foot float rod or noodle rod, prefer noodle in about 2-6 or 2-8, but my 10-20 float rod works great too, but get a hold of a nice lil holdover and wow, what a blast. I use my rod for everything from powerbait to spinners also, but one thing I don't do to much is take it on smaller streams, unless its not that brushy on that bank. Thats the only downfall. Otherwise a longer more limber rod is more fun.
But, all this stuff is all a matter of opinion and were all different from on another and have different opinions, so what ever rod u choose, I hope u have a sh*tload of fun with and tightlines.

Yes, me again. I'm feelin' helpful . I'm not going Loomis Nice rods, but in my mind you're paying a lot for that particular name. In a spinning outfit I like 6ft 6" to 7 ft max. The bass fisherman in me likes 6 to 12 lb test rating on the rod with medium power (fairly stiff tip). This will also work excellent for trout unless you plan on using 2 lb leaders.

I have this rod also SR6010 Length: 5' Power: 0 Pieces: 1 Spinning Our best selling ultra-light spinning rod. The 6010 is a sweetheart of a crappie rod, and it'll be your best friend on a little trout stream. It's as tough an ultra-light as we make, and will handle almost any oversized surprise. An ultra soft, moderate action protects the lightest monofilament. Model Color Length Line Weight Lure Weight Action Power Handle Item# MSRP IMX 5' 1 - 4 1/32 - 1/8 Moderate Ultra-Light 18 10232-01 I have caught two 18" bow's on this rod with 2# test. What a blast I also use it foe bluegills

I think you'll find the 782 a little heavy for trout. I love mine for walleye (and it's accidently landed a few steelhead) but when I'm trout fishing I'm a lot more likely to grab the WJR 741-2 (or, like the rest of the folks said, one of my cheap rods). Good luck!

I like the SJR-720 for trout. GL-2 or IMX. I use this with jigs on the Missouri for up to 5# fish, and I like it for creek fishing. The fast action helps a good hookset. It's good for creek fishing because it has enough backbone to horse a small trout out of a hole if need be, so you don't have to give up your hiding spot and spook the other fish in the hole. I also like it because it's so versatile. Good for bass, crappie and trout. I use this rod a lot. More than all my others. I agree with the people that you can catch lots of trout with a inexpensive gear. Especially if you are still fishing worms, PB or eggs. Nice rods, however, make you more efficient with spinners and jigs. You can tell right away if your hook is screwed up or if you have weed on your lure, and can reel in and re-load. Saves you some time.

I would want a rod atleast 6 feet. What about the SR 781? it is made in IMX only 2-6lb test 1/32-3/16 Fast Ultra-light The only problem with that rod is that it is a 1 piece, they make the 841 which is the same rod only 7 feet long and that is a 2 piece. Geez you guys got me all confused i was set on a 720 then a 782 now i am as lost as could be!

Alright, I'm gonna try to help you out Some guys NEED an IMX for trout. I am not one of them. (read: I buy quality gear when it is worth it). Oh, and I never fish with worms or powerbait because other things work soooo much better. Check out my other post above (I hope it helps). Don't get mad, but why do you want a rod rated for such light line?

Those Loomis rods are woth every penny, Also 2-6# is not light when a lot of people use 4-8# 1141s for steelhead. Just some thing to think about. If I did not want to feel the trout Fight. I would use my 5'6" 50-130# halibut rod and put my oversize sturgeon reel (penn international 50s) with 650 yards of 130# tuffline XP

I like to fish light gear, and i like to feel the most fight out of the fish as possible.
On a side note the 781 only comes in IMX.
