NET PEN PARKER, huh? Shut up, squid flosser!
Darn! My ultra-secret private fish pond has been discovered! There goes my "zipper lip".
Ok, not really. Here's the real scoop:
The UW does have a small salmonid hatchery program, with "the pond" situated just East of the Montlake Bridge that crosses The Cut.
Currently, only coho and nookies are raised in the pond. The program is still in place as a teaching/research tool for our undergraduate fish classes.
The Donaldson Trout program is all but gone. No longer are the huge, football sized, Donaldson Trouts in the raceways.

Those were my favorite fish.
The salmon are let go a little later in the spring, and bigger than normal, which causes them to return late to the pond. The nooks will come back in mid to late October, with the coho coming back in Nov/Dec. We do this to avoid all the tribal netting that goes on out in Salmon Bay in July/Aug/Sept, as well as wanting fish to come back when the undergraduate students are here.
The Kid is correct in that I spent many an hour in "The Pond" doing fisheries stuff. I guess as a past Fisheries Major at the UW, that is what one does. I have worked for a few different departments at the UW, but I've been back at Fisheries for the last 3+ years now. Great place to work, by the way! Oh, and I am a Senior Computer Specialist, doing nothing with fish, ifn you wanted to know.
Oh yeah, and nothing hurts worse than having your finger chomped on by a big ol' mean buck coho! Ouch.
Starting around the middle of October, the students will start working the pond on M-W-F at 10:30-12:30. You should stop by and check it out. Or, stop by my office, and I'll give you a tour.
