Begining April 1 (to follow the WDFW's lead), the Queets will go to Wild Steelhead Release.

From what I understand, the head bio for ONP had decided that the ONP will follow what the WDFW does in the future concernig WSR.

So excpect wild steelhead release next year and the year after, at the very least!

Thanks to all who sent in their letters and let those at ONP that they support wild steelhead release

Is the road open to the campground and is the river clear to float down from the campground to Hartzell? TIA, Mark

I guess every little bit counts but with the Queets the tribal harvest accounts for 85% of the fish taken compared to the 15% that will be affected by the closure.

In any case, regardless of the over-harvest by the tribes, the fishing in the public section of the Queets is phenomenal this time of year.

If you don't have a boat and can't afford to book a trip with someone who does the Queets is the place to go.

This reminds me of:

Queets should be controlled by WDFW as well. I don't get this national park crap and different rules etc. It is confusing for people trying to find 2 sets of rules and most campers and hikers have no idea.

I'll second that. Never understood why WDFW doesn't just have a special section for rules specific to ONP.

Is this because the run is depressed? I've long thought of driving from Portland to fish the Queets this time of year, but haven't because of reports of worsening numbers of steelhead there. (and good numbers here)
