All of you Cowlitz dippers, check out how the big boys do it on the Kenai!

what a load of fish!

Click on the video prompt upper right of the page. Time-limited viewing opportunity, as I'm sure that clip will come down after more interesting events take center stage up there.

Check out the fishing forum while you are there (almost at the end of the left sidebar menu). There were a couple guys looking for specific Alaska recommendations on another thread. This the place for the most up-to-date info.

Smelting is a kick, but how many can a guy eat? Not criticism, experience. I remember filling garbage bags with them and then trying to find enough people to give them all away.

FNP...did you see the article on slack water kings? I guess the Alaskans have figured out a better mouse trap for catching those slow hole cruisers? (remark not aimed at you)

Look in the forums under the thread "You know it's getting bad when..."

FnP ... you're showing that WA influence ;\) They're called hooligan here and it's a popular activity for AK residents!

Been watching them (dippers) under the Warren Ames brdige as we've been running out to Kenai and back to Corey's parent's place.

Been quite a few years since I've dipped for them anywhere ... a quart bucket for me and I'd probably be good for another decade \:\)

Haven't seen / heard of many in the Ditch this year ... kinda a nuisance to have 2-3 dangling off the kwikie trebles we used to run in there in past years.

Many years ago my father took me on a steelhead fishing trip to the north shore of Lake Superior. It just so happened that the smelt were running also. After fishing all day we stopped on our way back to camp at the rivermouth where the smelters were "killing" them. I'll never forget the sight of a pickup truck with its bed just about full with smelt. Turned out the guys had a mink ranch near Minneapolis.

Man it's getting better by the hour!
The thread is now three pages and counting! I printed a copy 'cause from previous experience, I don't think it will survive the night before it is erased by the moderator.

You're right Stringer.... it's still a live one!

I thought for sure it was dead a couple days ago, but looks like KK is gonna let us keep beating up on each other a little longer. Pretty funny how all the new blood from the PNW that recently posted can see the light on this issue, while the local snaggers and baggers continue to justify their unethical tactics and lash back with more personal attacks!

In the eye field, we have a saying..... it's impossible to refract a 20/100 brain to 20/20!

Speaking of dem hooligan ... they've arrived in the Kasilof in pretty good numbers. Plugs with single hooks impaling them on a regular basis ... another option to dip!

typical Alaskan mentality, why learn how to catch them when you can floss them.

That one had me rolling!

You are obviously a thinker... what a grand idea! You are really onto something there. I gotta find someone to dip hoolies and vac pac them to maintain quality. If I can find a supply of quality bait, I am willing to give it a go in July.

Nice work over there doc. Unreal how the locals try to justify a 'legal' snagging technique and turn it into something sporting. Bad enough that they feel compelled to fish at the equivalent of a trout pond, now they are inventing new ways to show their true colors. Can you imagine living on the KP and having all of the diverse opps to fish there, and instead, hitting the lagoon.....?

I agree that since the ADFW rules are the same on all the streams up there, you will see this method used at numerous other locations, just a matter of time.

What kind of person highlites the front page of their website with a snagging technique?

Homey2

Looking forward to getting a little help on the AOJ Board. I couldn't agree more with your signature quote.... let's see how the locals like it on AOJ.

Bet you get a smartA$$ reply about it from one of the snagger/bagger/ whack'em/stack'em types before the week is up.
