I just bought a new scotty 1100 electric downrigger, and i am not to thrilled with the rod holder it came with! It does not seem to be deep enough,my rod butt section doesent seem to go in far enough? I dont really want to risk losing my rod/reel. What are you guy's using ? Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions.

On some of the scotty DR rod holders there is a plastic "pin" in the bottom that needs to be removed with pliars. This was the issue I had with mine.

I just started using mine & didn't have any issues with the rod holder it came with. Try mounting a "Fish On" rod holder aft of the down rigger, that should work.

I am with FF on this.

I removed mine from the boom. Those particuliar rod holders are extremely hard on your reel seat.

I'll third that motion. One of the first things I did was go out and buy the type or rod holder I like and mounted it elsewhere.

A fish on rod holder can be bought for about 12 bucks... losing a good rod to a faulty downrigger setup is expensive.

I would remove it and mount a better one next to the rigger' so you can concentrate on fishing and not worrying about your pole.

Or dump the Scottys and buy a pair of Cannon Mag 10s which can be retrofit to accept Quick Draw rod holders. \:\)

Can't figure out what this board has against Cannons. I love mine.

Could be that Scptty's are heads and toes above the Mag 10's, I know I have them both but very rarely use the cannon. In fact I just went and purchase a third Scotty 1106. Scotty's have a better method of stopping when the lead is up, better method of letting line out, are faster and spin and tilt in all directions, making it easier to retrieve your lead and stow the riggers.

Just my opinion though, and I have used both. I will be selling my cannon on this site soon as I no longer have a need for it.

I also don't like the rod holder on the Scotty downrigger so I removed it and placed a Quick Draw rod holder on my boat rail behind the downrigger. Much better way to go IMHO.

Oh... I have two Fish-On rod holders with rail adapters that I will sell. Used but in fine condition. $20 for the pair...

got to agree with fishng1 on this one. I have had cannons, penn, and scotty and would go with scotty hands down for the reasons mentioned. I never had any real problems with the other brands, but find the scottys much easier to use. just my $.02

Adipose-

Scotty's have a lifetime guarrantee, a faster retrieve ratio and draw less amperage. Why would you buy Cannon?

I used to sell sporting goods and hated taking returns on Cannons. In the wharehouse we would have a hole pile of them to be sent back and the rep. was a jerk about it. In six years or so I NEVER had a customer return a Scotty for warranty.

Just my .02
