(I know what your thinking :p )(No the Outboard)

Recently I was trolling along and the 8 Horse Johnson just died in mid stroke. We changed the plugs and have now found that there is no spark.

Whats next?

h20 beat me to it. The magneto is a good place to start. I'd also look at the plug wires.

Check your kill switch. I had one go out on my '86 9.9 hp.

I'd give Sea-Way Marine (W. Seattle) a call and ask them. Although they sell parts they know their stuff when trouble shooting problems.

Is it 2 cylinder?

Will it run on only one of them?

Will it not run at all?

I have blown a few coils when I used to run Johnsons and Evinrudes. It would run on one so it was an easy fix. Just replace the coil. But if is just dead on both I dunno what to do.

This sounds to easy but is there a fuse in one of the electric lines inside the cowling? I have seen them blow and you will get no spark until yo replace it. Usually there is a spare on that line incase this happens. At least there is one on my Yamaha.

Thanks for the replies.
It is a '96
I went over to the Johnson shop and they have a "Power Pack" $85.00 and no returns. Does that have the Magneto in it?

We have no spark at all. How do you check the Kill Switch?

yeah, the 'power pack' should be a magneto replacement.

what do i know though, i'm getting all this from remembering how to repair my line trimmers. the magnetos tended to crap out on the ones we used in the rain. the guy in the saw shop said their chainsaws do the same thing when left exposed to the elements for extended periods of time.

it could be the kill switch but you could rule that in or out by testing it with a voltmeter or even a check light.

i'm banking on my original diagnosis. I'm not a small engine mechanic, i just play one on the internet.

good luck

I think you could probably get some Viagra to help out with your 'Johnson' problem.

I have always heard that information you get on the internet is worth what you pay for it, unless of course you pay for it.

I think I will test the kill switch, and then by the power pack. It's just that that = about 40 beers. I will have to quit drinking for a couple days ;\)

Gutz-

By your beer in cans. Then simply drink enough to make money recyling; buy parts by drinking beer!

That's my most recent scheme. It's actually hard work......

I hope you figure it out. Can you get the shop manual? they usually have a very basic troubleshooting algorithm. (If you're lucky you can find one cracked out of the shrink wrap at your local shop and "peruse" that section. A rarity, but possible.)

The only beer worth drinking from a can is Guinness or Young's Double Chocolate Stout but I like your style Phreak!

I had no spark on my kicker and it was the leads from the points that were grounding out.

I have owned & worked on many 9.9 Johnsons & if it just up & dies, it is usually the powerpack on any motor newer than 1977

No wonder your Johnson lost it's spark, you drank 40 beers and then tried to use it. You may have to flog it a little to get it to work again.

Go present your problem at the outboard repair forum on iboats.com - there's a couple full-time outboard mechanics online there that have saved me tons of time and money diagnosing problems.
