I am headed up in a few weeks and know it's going to be awesome this year. Any reports?

I have only fished up there twice, any secret spots between Cape Beale and the mouth of Port Alberni Inlet? Have fished "the wall" and that whole side a bit, any other ideas.

We uses anchovies behind Hot Shots and plugs last year and did well. Any other recommendations would be gladly accepted.

Thanks

im leavin for a week starting this thursday to fish all of barkley sound.look for a hoochie called mother of pearl and that at the right depth behind a green or red flasher is the killer.try a slice of herring jammed into the skirt with it and u will be in the fish.also look for roberts passage and be there before light and fish tight to the rocks this place is always good.it will get packed with boats but when the fish turn on just sit back and watch the action.

My boss just walked in the office after being at Barkley for 4 days. The report I get is as follows. The fishing is great if you can get outside: Limits of halibut and kings by 10:30 AM, common. They fished inside around "the wall" near Bamfield, at Diplock and also, Pill Pt. They picked up a few 20 and 30 pound kings and 5 or 6 healthy silvers, but had to work hard. The sockeye are still running as well. They said there were a hundred or so boats working the inlet.

Good luck.

Did well with anchovies and Hot Spot Green/Glow flashers last summer. Trolled mostly around Diplock Island and surrounding waters.

Here's my report from last week (with pictures for Parker!):

We motored up from Shilshole to Ucluelet in about 8 hrs Friday. Spent Sat checking out a boat problem and didn't get to fish much. Caught silvers at Wya point in the afternoon. Kept two clipped fish after sorting through many wilds.
Sun we went about 12 m offshore to what the locals call "SW corner". Fish were thick here....caught and released kings to 18 lbs and lotsa silvers. Discovered that a tip from a fellow board member was a good one...use large (6 or 7 in) Tomic plugs to avoid being pestered by smaller fish. Probably released about 30 fish trying to find a big one. Here's what we kept

Second day we decided to go even farther out to "big bank". Coordinates we had put us 22 miles offshore with nobody around. We all switched to large plugs and caught kings to 27lbs. There are also some very large (to 15lb) wild silvers that you had to release.

Here's another pic:

Went back to the same area on Tues and didn't do as well, but caught Kings to 22lbs.

Took a day off Wed and then went to a new location on Big Bank called the Gullies (its a huge area) after getting coordinates from a neighbor on the dock. This turned out to be where the guide and charter boats were fishing and had tons of silvers. Lost one big King and ended up with Kings 18 and 22 with 3 hatchery silvers.
See below:

Ride home during Fridays storm was slow but no real problems. Left at dawn to get off the ocean before the storm hit (gale warnings on sw Vancouver Island) and didn't get any wind until Sekiu. Pretty rough from there to Pt Wilson. Took 10 hours total to get back.

So my recommendation if you're going up that way is to fish offshore if you can. All of the big fish we saw (53,46,46,42, many 30's) came from there. It was fairly easy to find fish but the Island West guides seem to be able to consistently find the big ones. Saw fish over 30 lbs every day we were there. GPS is recommended cause it was foggy in the morning and there are no landmarks or buoys out there. Also use large plugs if you are after big fish.

Good Luck!

We'll be up there from the 20th to the 26th, planning on fishing inside, mainly from Pill pt. out to Bamfield. Are you staying on your boat?

We'll be at Haggard Cove, at the mouth of Alberni Inlet. I haven't personaly fished the area, however my dad and others in the family have fished it quite a bit. Word on the street is that bait, mostly herring is the ticket right now.

Pill Pt is near the mouth of Alberni Inlet.

I stayed at Haggard Cove last year. Its a great place with great food. Big plates of steak, seafood and smoked sockeye salmon for snacking on and unlimited beverages . Saw a black bear combing the shore near the lodge and a whale swimming past too

Koho, cool, we were sort of wondering how it was going to go with that outfit. Next year we might camp at Poett Nook, but this year we wanted to have less stuff to deal with. Did you do any crabing or shrimping while you were there? Also, when were you there and how was the local fishing?

Its real nice not to have to deal with making the 3 meals a day. And the meals were great last year. The head cooks been there a while and she should be back this year as well. There's no electricity, just gas lamps. But there's hot showers there.

We didn't do any crabbing or shrimping and didn't see anyone else set any crab nets last year.
We were there Aug 1-4 last year. The northerns didn't yet arrive but there were lots of cohos and springs being caught. Caught some nice rock cod as well. They will point out where the hot spots are.

It can get hairy making the run from Alberni to Haggard in the afternoon. The winds and current flows in during that time.

Good luck, it should be a blast.
