I have been catching fish all the last two weeks every trip. Didn't get to fish sat. (when the weather first started to change), but fished for six hours this morning with my partner with absolutely nothing to show for it. How is this change in the weather (ie. pressure) affecting your catch ratio the last few days? I did not see one net at Redondo the whole time, but heard that some fish were caught at three tree and pt. robinson. Any opinions/facts on high to low or low to high pressure changes?

Many river fisherman tend to say that rain brings new fish into the rivers. If that is true, it is reasonable to assume that rain puts the fish in the salt on the move. You may have to move to find the fish/bait again. BTW, yesterday AM, at least at possession, was pretty hot.

Many of the fish at Redondo are fish that are holding the the saltwater for rains and then head up the Puyallup. Other fish also pass through there on their way south. But that is what they are doing, passing through and not holding. If the fish sense good rain and are near their final destinaion (i.e. Puget Sound) they will head strait to their river or the area directly off of it.

I am not sure that redondo/pt.robinson/three tree would qualify as permanent holding areas for the fish headed south. Even if the fish were holding there to a degree, there should be others still passing through. I marked almost as many fish today as earlier this week, but no hook-ups all morning. Most people are aware of the effect of rain on fish at the rivers mouths, but I was wondering more about just the effect of the pressure drop between fri./sat./sun. on everyones catch ratio compared to the last two weeks when the weather has been constant. Or to put it another way.......Did the change (or rain) turn the bite off or was it just a coincidence?

Heavy rain raises rvers, creeks, etc and dumps silt into the salt reducing visibility. Plus, of course, the fish are on the move. Even in rivers fish do not bite as well on rising water.

Juggernaut,
I think your theory about the pressure drop has some merit. Denny Rickards, in his book Flyfishing Stillwaters For Trophy Trout, claims that the lower the pressure is, the more sluggish the trout will be. Fishing improves when the barometer is stable and above 30 and below 29.7 you might as well stay home. (I'm reading about 29.8 right now) Most river fisherman know that the fishing is usually not good during the storm/rain when the river is rising, but after when conditions have stabilized and the river is beginning to drop again. I've often wondered whether this affects fish in saltwater but it makes sense to me that it does especially when its a sudden change like we just had.

O.K. so far every reply I have gotten (and appreciated) has been refering to the bite around the rivers. By looking at the lack of posts concerning actual "catching" this weekend, compared to previous weeks, I might well conclude that not many of us in the open salt areas did very well. I was really hoping for some input from the 5-10% that usually seem to do well on a regular basis. Any help out there?

Just saw this post and have some thoughts on the subject.

In the salt, I have found the rain/lower pressure can turn on a good bite. This time of year, additional rain seems to bring fish into the sound, perhaps a little ahead of thier "regular" arrival.

Likewise, rising pressure seems to turm the bite off for a couple of days. When we go out of this weather system back to a higher pressure system, I won't bother to fish for a couple of days, when the pressure steadies out a bit, the bite will come back.

All that being said, fished Friday, Saturnday and Sunday locally.

Totals brought to the boat during a low pressure event.

6 Kings 5-20 lbs, 9 Silvers 4-10lbs, Combined fishing time 6.5 hours.

I'd say the bite was on.

My experience mirrors C&Bs. When we get snotty weather, I find we ususally do real well, and this weekend was no exception. Put in a quick hour on the water Saturday at Yeomalt in the lee of all that wind for 3 quick kings. Sunday was the best bite I have experienced all summer on kings... was pretty much continuous action from 6-8 AM.

Thanks to D3Smartie for the hot tip, we had it to ourselves Sunday!

But, if you are fishing somewhere like EB after three inches of rain go up a high rise building and look at the bay....brown silt out to Alki point.

Weather was awful, but not so bad I didn't hit my local beach for the evening session. Got a nice hatchery hen, 7-lb, on my third cast. First punch on the card for 2004! I'd say that the nasty weather has moved in some ocean fish.

All this rain will put kings in to the rivers. The rain should bring the silvers in from the ocean too.

JD, I haven't been out since I saw you last. I am moving this weekend. I will get some fishing time in after I get settled.
