I recently became owner of another boat. A 19 ft Glas-Ply hard top, 1971. It seems to be a very solid boat. But, I am thinking of new power for her. She has an OMC 155 outdrive, with a 6cyl buick motor. She runs good, but I am thinking of a Out board conversion with a 175-200 hp, or a mercruiser 4.3 with an Alpha series. Has anyone had a conversion on their I/O? And are you happy with it. Also, would appreciate suggestions on who to take it to? It sure would open up the fishing room. Thanks in advance. By the way, the current power plant and outdrive might be for sale???

I think you're making trouble for yourself. You probably won't save any money, and you'll end up with a boat that will be hard to sell. Better to sell it and buy an outboard, if that is what you want.

If you're planning on keeping the boat forever, go ahead and make the conversion. It's a time consuming proposition to install new new stringers and reinforce the transom. A lot of work, but a fun winter project.

Check the iboats forum for info on converting from I/O to outboard. Lots of helpful folks at this site.
I would agree with wolverine that if it is a boat you plan on keeping it may be worth it, but it may make it tough to sell later.
Just my $.02
