5 Pulley Anchor Systems

Bought a transom mount, 5 pulley, side-pull anchor system for the DB (yep, it's that far along!). I am having some real difficulties (OK, I'm puzzled) about where these other 3 pulley's get mounted. I need to keep the anchor line away from the oar locks, but still at the "right" angles for maximum torque, etc. I can see there is a lot of physics involved with the angles of pull, etc. and don't want to tear the boat apart just pulling in the anchor. If anyone is using a system like this: http://www.clacka.com/accessories/sidePull.htm I would sure appreciate your input, and PICTURES if you have any of where (and how) you mounted the pulleys. Thanks, in advance, for any insight into this dilemma. I can be finished with the boat this weekend if I can get a) the anchor pulleys mounted and b) the oars/oar locks properly mounted. (and yes, I'll post pics of it...but it still needs a name...will be open to suggestions. I was thinking "Phoenix"). All the best, Mike

Thanks for the link. I had seen that, but sadly they don't show the front pulley, and how they set up the angle back to the rope locking cleat.
I've got the locations for the first two pulley's figured out (the first and second ones going towards the front of the boat from the back). It's the orientation of the final one, and how far forward it is set that has got me baffled.
May have to just wing it.
Mike

Mike, Don't know if it is properly installed or not (it works) but a friends boat has the forward pulley mounted just behind the front seats and the jam cleat is right next to him off to the side of the rowers seat sorry neither of us have digital cameras or I would drive over and get you a few pics

Mike, it looks to me like the front pulley is mounted on the remote bracket that is shown with the Dierk's parts. That's the way mine works...the jam cleat and front pulley are mounted on the remote bracket together and it's mounted on the edge of the side tray (aluminum boat). The Don Hill boat in the link shows them mounting it on a block that spans two ribs.

Skywalker: Ahhhhh...now I see it. Oddly, that is about the same solution I had come up with. I've got a few extra pieces of 4" wide by 3/4" oak, and they will easily span between rib sections. Thanks also to Drifter for E-mailing me a pic of his Clacka with the same esential set-up. The only stickler is going to be setting the proper angle from the front pulley to the cleat, so the rope stays secure. Think I can handle that one.. Thanks guys! Only challenge left is the oar lock holders. Wanting to use UHMW, but don't have a big enough piece...so, a couple cutting boards made from the same stuff are going to get hacked up and epoxied to the right size. The wife will never miss 'em... Mike B., I have a side pulley system on my DB. Looks similar to what you bought. If you live near North Bend your are welcome to come by and take a look at it. I would take a picture but I don't have a digital cam, yet.

Mike last two cents...every guy is built different...play around with where you land the last pulley by the oar lock...I mounted mine a little further forward as I am like 5'8 and where they said to mount it further back seemed real hard to pull and it seemed to stress out the rails moving it forward like 8 inches made it work like butter....I then put the cleat by my hip as it was a straight up and down movement to grab it or set it... not a weird side pull..if ya know what I mean .
sorry no pics, have no idea where they are and guy on the forum is the new owner.
Bud.

Thanks for all the superb help...I think I've got a solution figured out. Mike@NB: Appreciate the offer, but I'm 2 passes north of you, 35 miles out Hwy. 20. Be an all day trip! Budnate: I'm a short dude too...5'8" in shoes. Fortunately, this boat is only 13'6" stem to stern. I was going to set that first pulley closer to the transom..then got to thinking about how the torque that would be needed to pull in the anchor at the sharper angle, so it has been moved to the first frame piece. If all works well, I'll post some pics tomorrow evening. Guess we won't really know till it's on the river and used a few times, but at least with the way it will be done all the angles work out well and hopefully it won't tear anything up. Mike

Mike,
I would go for the cleat that Mooch posted over the alum one. I have the Alum one on my sled for my river anchor. I HATE it! Several times I have had trouble getting the rope free from the cleat as the weight of the boat has pulled the line into the cleat so far that I can't pull it back out. The cleat that Mooch posted wouldn't do that as the pulling motion will automatically loosen up its grip. So if you haven't already installed the plastic one go get one like his! You'll be happy you did.
