Dare I ask a question here that is not of political nature? \:D

I am looking at a new house that has propane heat. What are the pros and cons of Propane, how often do you have to fill, how much does it cost with respect to natural gas?

THanks for any info.

I went from natural gas to propane when I moved 3yrs ago. Price varies and I can't really tell you anything in that regard other than it seems comparable to me.

I have propane heat, hot water, oven and it works just as well as my natural gas did at my last place.

You just have to keep an eye on the tank. During cold winters you can burn through 500 gal in just over a month if you are not careful. But during a warm summer your tank could easily last 3-4 months.

We've run out a few times and it's not a big deal. They can usually have a truck out the next day - but may charge an extra fee.

The hard part is not having a regular bill. In the summer you get used to not having a big propane payment, then by the time Thanksgiving and Christmas comes around, and you are on your second full tank running 500-600 bucks, it can put a dent in your budget if you don't plan for it...

My neighbor looked at it when he built his house and felt it was worth the money to run gas line to his house. Our driveways are over 2k feet from the road so it was spendy. He did not want the tank or having to deal with a maintence contract to keep the tank full all winter.

Propane is good.
I built my home about 10yr ago. propane stovetop, dryer, hot water (you never run out of hot), forced air furnace, dryer and hot tub.

notes: Put in some wall lamps for lighting, The furnace is a killer and we haven't used it since installing small freestanding fireplace deal.

2700 sq ft with big open great room open to upper loft and bedrooms upstairs. after once established we can pay the gas guy $130/mo if we wish but instead I try to keep up during the winter and enjoy paying very little over the summer.

be careful though when the power goes out as you will have lots of friends coming to visit to shower and enjoy the heat. and a cold beer as long as you have connected your generator to the fridge, well, and septic pumps \:\)

Sky-Guy, non-political posts are a refreshing change.

Those propane wall lamps sound like a heck of an idea - especially for winter. I know that mantle type lamps create a ton of heat - -probably more effecient than a furnace. Plus you get light w/o electricity.
