...and wackos, 'highlights' doesn't count.
Post your reading recommendations here...here's mine:
1. American Scream , The Bill Hicks Story - Cynthia True....the funniest and most important comedian you've never heard of.
2. Imperial Hubris - Anonymous....scathing criticism of the Bush administration's bumbling ineptitude waging the 'war on terror'.
3. Through Our Enemie's Eyes - Anonymous...better read this book if you want to begin to grasp the gravity of the aforementioned ineptitude.
4. The Brother's K - David James Duncan...perhaps the most beautiful book about family ever written.
5. The River Why? - David James Duncan....quirky novel centers around the first person author's steelhead and salmon fishing obsession....a coming of age tale of sorts.
6. Holy Blood, Holy Grail - Micheal Baigent....excruciatingly researched and verified, this book claims an alternate symbolism for 'the vessel', fascinating iof not a hard swallow.
7. Tom Clancy - Battle Ready....yup, Bush still an idiot. Even a hardened conservative like Tom Clancy can see that another four years of incompetency could be disastrous for this country.
8. Plan of Attack - Bob Woodward....oh look, war with Iraq at all costs. SURPRISE!!
9. The Baghavad Gita...don't just ssay you'll read it someday, read it now.
10. The Gnostic Gospels...this is the stuff modern christians love to tear down. How might women's role in society be different if God were both the Mother and the Father?
11. The Bible...if only to keep in perspective that nearly the entire old testament comes from other texts (and I can't get enough begatting).

------------------------------------------------------------ Hey bongH20, Does High Times count? I didn't see it on your list , so I'll assume it doesn't. ------------------------------------------------------------ When I'm not reading Highlights and just want something light and fun--I really liked J.A. Jance's series of novels about fictional Seattle Detective J.P. Beaumont.

Careful now.....wouldn't want to overly stimulate yourself there grandpa.
Reach for the sky next week and grab yourself a copy of the tv guide..,...after all it IS far more topical than the Baghavad Gita.
The two on my list that I think are most important for conservatives to read? Battle Ready and The Brother's K.
So....who's got something for me to read now that I've finished the biography on my idol, Bill Hicks?

Hey eddie-
nice list, I should be able to find something interesting in there.
Have you read any David James Duncan? He writes in a 'prose' style that's very easy to follow and covers themes I think you'd be interested in.
Anyone that hangs out around here, for that matter.

H2O - The River Why is one of my all time favorites - I've also read The Brothers K and a collection of his short stories. I agree with you, I like the way he writes.

My list in no particular order:
Easyrider, anything and everything by HG Wells and Jules Verne.... Better make that twice. Almost everything by Alan Dean Foster... What the hell, If you got a few days to kill you might as well go for Mission Earth by L Ron Hubbard...
I'd rather read to escape this world than to read to find out whats going on in it...
There's always Fox news for that! :p
