Does anyone know where I can get pure anise oil?
I'm trying a couple new cures from Scott Haugen's book on egg cures (Frank Amato Publications). A couple receipes call for pure anise oil but I'm unable to locate it. I can find the usual stuff at GI Joes and Fisherman's Marine (Mike's, Pro-Cure, etc) but it ain't the same as the real stuff.
If anyone has any ideas of where I can buy it in the Portland/Vancovuer area or perhaps a website where I can order it, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Coho Angler, You must be married and your wife does the shopping. Just go to the grocery store and you'll find it in the spice section as mentioned above.

Anise oil? Who needs eggs? Full disclosure, I would rather fish the eggs, nothing better.
Interesting recipe: take a couple or three tablespoons of Vaseline, place in a cup and float it in a pan of boiling water. Watch it melt to the viscosity of motor oil. Once melted add 3 or 4 drops of anise oil (not the extract, water soluble kind found in the supermarket). Stir to mix briefly and remove from pan of boiling water. While still warm and liquid add small balls of sponge about the size of cranberries. Smash them with spoon along side of cup to provide full absorbtion of vaseline mixture. Remove from cup and cool in ice water.
These little balls of spice will catch steelhead; at least they did in Michigan in a pinch. Washington steelhead may be far too sophisticated for this trick but I will try in the event I have no eggs.

Anise extract contains alchahol, not a good thing to add to eggs, get the pure stuff.

A few years back I had the buddie of a buddie in the front of the boat pulling plugs on the Salmon. after a while the guy pulled something out of his pocket and was smearing it all over his plug.. I could smell it... Anise ... Long story short... by the end of the day that crap had migrated to just about every piece of tackel I had.. anything he touched.. and somehow everything else in the boat...

Santiago,
Sounds like a neat trick. Can you microwave the vaseline? Also how long do the scented sponge balls last in and out of the water? Ever use any other scents--say shrimp oil?

What you are looking for is "Pharmaceutical Grade" anise oil. Check with your local pharmacists (particularly the ones that do "compounding")....not that many carry it, so you may have to hunt a bit. The stuff in the supermarket is not the same.
By the way, regarding nightcrawlers, as a kid I inadvertantly tasted many worms after baiting my hook and picking up a sandwich without washing my hands....worms DO NOT taste like anise/licorice, trust me! The taste is distinct and unforgetable.

Thanks for the help. I will continue to check local pharamacies. I haven't been able to find it yet, but I'll keep trying. The grocery store stuff is anise extract, complete with alcohol, which I don't want on my eggs.
