I think I recall a topic like this before but I wasn’t in the market then but I need some advice on downriggers.

I want to buy 2 electric downriggers for my boat but there are quite a few make and model options to choose from.

I don’t want to wait all day for a slow downrigger to retrieve, but I don’t want too large a price tag. Can anyone give me the pros and cons between the Cannon models and the Scottys. I have fished with the Scottys many times and know how they operate.

Another vote for Scotty.

Scottys are less expensive then the Cannons.

Scottys are faster on the retrieve (except for the high end, very expensive Cannons).

Scottys will handle larger weights.

Scottys draw less power from the battery.

Scottys DO NOT use power to lower the ball.

Scottys use less components in the drive, 1 belt from the motor to the spool (older models 2 belts), no gears or clusters of gears.

Scottys are very tough, one of mine fell off my boat on the freeway at 55 mph, the only thing that broke was the hinge on the cover. We used it all day without any problems.

Another vote for Scotty. Check out Outdoor Emporium. They have had great prices on them in the past.

I have had Cannon, and Penns, while good, not as stupid proof as Scottys. Go with Scotty electrics. When you have a problem, If you do, just take them to your local dealer and he will fix them up for nothing.

There is only one choice, Scotty! Besides being the superior product , the customer service is simply outstanding. I have one of the earliest models and one of the later ones and have no complaints with either. I have had the old one in twice in it's lifetime (I bought it brand new at the Reel Thing) for maintenance and both times they installed upgrades at no charge. One was install of auto shutoff vs foot switch, and one was brakes. The newer one has been in once and had the brakes upgraded as part of the maintenance and again no charge. I have never had any downtime on the water due to a failure of either unit. The old one is probably around 17 years old and the "new" one is closer to 14 or 15. There is only one choice, Scotty! Outdoor Emporium has probably the best price and selection and they have factory authorized service available should you ever need it. I will add one piece of advice on the Scotty, when braking to a stop, ease the brakes on, do not just let go of the handle, you can snap a 'rigger cable or possibly break a belt especially if you are running the large lead. Good luck with whatever you get.

Scottys!!! I've had Penn manuals, Penn electrics, and Cannons. I now have three Scotty 1106's. All are good, but Scottys are the best.

Gee, I wonder what everybody's favorite is. Personally I use .......................................................Scotty's. Got mine at the sportsman show a few years ago from Auburn Sports Marine. I believe they are also a service center for Scotty.
