I was on American Lake for 6 hours catching trout today, one really nice fish. When I got home and washed my boat it was tarnished from the waterline down. Looks like a boat that has spent time in the salt.

#1, how do I clean it off?

#2, how do I prevent this from happening again?

I take great pride in my gear and this looks bad. Any help or suggestions?

"SHARKHIDE" it works.
Do a search, then order some, when it arrives apply it. You'll be forever gratefull! You'll want some of the pre-cleaner from them also.

Doesn't Sharkhide seal the finish once it's clean?

I use metalwax available on the web, site is same name, to clean the metal.

It's non-abrasive. The cleaner you apply then wax off. Pulls the stains out of the metal great and makes it look new again. Their wax protects but not as long as I'd like. I'm in the salt a lot and the wax protection is lasting only a couple months.

Lots of info on Sharkhide from past threads. Use the acid cleaner and follow it with a couple of coats of Sharkhide and you are good to go for several years.

I avoided the cleaner because I thought overspill would eat up the vynal covering on the side of the boat. Used 3M ALuminum clearner and took off the buffing compounds with some commercial window cleaner (Laquer Thinner is recommended for this, but back to the worry on the vynal).

Sharkhide applies easy.

Lot of work using the cleaner. I didn't do the bottom of the boat, but the sides and bow are holding up great, so far.

Will Sharkhide and it's acid wash fix this? I am particularly concerned with the area at the water line.

you'll have to clean that off before you put the sharkhide on. Its a sealer not a cleaner. You could polish that off with Flitz, or Mothers polish OR use the cleaner thats on the sharkhide website and then either polish and apply sharkhide or just sharkhide.

Sharkhide's acid wash WILL clean that up. After you clean it then apply the Sharkhide.
