Hey guys,
I am seeing some talk about the pinks in Hoodsport. My commander is coming from Fort Belvoir, and would like to do some fishing. He is originaly from Idaho and has been stationed here before. He has fished here many times, and actually got me started fishing out here. I try not to bug you all too much, as I know its a tight community, but I want to get him back into some salmon fishing as he has been away for about 4 years now. Do you think we will fair decently walking into the hatchery at hoodsport, or do you all have any better options. Also, whats a good choice of tackle for the area? Any info would be great! Thanks you guys.

You should be able to catch some walking into the hatchery. You could also drive through Hoodsport and park along the road, there is access there also.

Just use 6 to 8 pound test and some pink jigs, or anything else that's pink. You should have no problem. Don't forget, barbless hooks.

I may be up there on Friday. If you see a white center console boat with a blue windshield give a wave. Good luck.

I have seen a couple of references to 6lb or 8lb test lines for catching the pinks. Are the pinks leader shy so lite line is necessary?

The lighter line is just eazier to break when the seals grab the fish.

The light line will allow you to cast smaller jigs and stuff a lot easier. Also, if you need more than 8# line to catch a humpy you would be considered a cracker. \:D

I always thought lead wrapped trebles were easier to tie on with 30 pound test.......

RK43, to each his own. \:D That's not my way of doing things but have at it if you wish. ;\)
Add a little pink bead above that treble, they like it better that way.

so is it worth me taking a trip over this weekend? are the pinks actually in. i will be bringing some friends who really would like to catch a salmon, and this is the perfect chance.

it so much fun hooking into a pink just to see it being chased by a seal. but i get sick of tieing up every time i hook a fish.
also are there any kings in the area?

thanks,

run_a_bait...The pinks are "in" the area. However, the hatchery has opened up the gate to allow them into the complex. Now the fish are not stacking up like before. Afternoon incoming tide seems to be better at the mouth of Finch Creek. The humpies are a little scattered (along the shoreline from Lilliwaup to "Chumville")right now due to the minus tides.
I've heard from a friend that there was a 25lb chinook caught up by Ayock. So, they're just now starting to show.

MaribuMonkey... Yeah, the light line is mainly to get the smaller lures cast out there. We mainly hooked them4-5ft below the surface, using 1/8oz jigs, small spinners, and pixee spoons with the pink or green insert. The largest producer for me was the jig followed closely by a size 3 vibrax. We saw a few of the guys on shore hooking up on the fly gear and corkie/yarn, but the guys swiming jigs saw more action. ;\)

HntnFsh,

The bank access is just in front of the hatchery. I'm much more comfortable in the boat.
Most folks are launching from the rough Potlatch(Coleman Powerhouse) ramp.

last year some guys had their pontoon boats launched right there and got away from the crowd and on top of fish. it is a good idea and that way you don't have to cast 123 yds \:D

I really hope I have not helped perpetuate this perception? Anybody should feel welcome to post questions, comments, reports, and suggestions about fishing. I'm glad you posted.

Keep your eyes out for me. I'll be fishing the hatchery from the banks.

Friday and Saturday were slow. Did not see a fish on Saturday, and a few caught on Friday. Except I caught a little crab on a jig. Considered putting him whole on a cracker, but I forgot the tabisco.

I was out standing next to VHawk in the morning on Saturday. A lot of fisherman standing around and not catching anything. I talked with a WDFW person at the hatchery and he said 1/2 the run is already complete at the Finch Creek Hatchery. I think the Finch Creek Pink run is usually earlier than most other runs.

I stopped by on the way home today. The tide was just starting to come in.I saw 2 fish come up the creek, but didnt see anybody catch a fish.
I'll check it out again next week.

On the Puyallup and Carbon I use 80lb power pro with 5, 6/0 gama's tied on the line a foot apart. Then 6inches below the last hook tie a swivel and clip with 1 ounce of lead attached, thats my kind of humpy jig
