Once again, they were working for the fisheries dept, testing fish from a set net, in between pulls they would drop a line under these nets and reel up as many as 60 fish a day just to kill time. They were not targeting any fish therefore had no need to have anything to kill a fish ie- pistol or harpoon. As for any kind of records, that went out the door as soon as the other person touched the rod, The fish was measured twice because they did not believe the first measurement. the measurement was taken by means of having lead weight tied onto a leader, dropped down and yes straight down, hooked on the tail then measured (twice) the 9'11 is an accurate measurement now there is probrably some room for error on the width of 6' now you guys do the math on the halibut calculater, It is my undersdtanding that the calculaters tend to be very heavy, so even if it was 200 lbs off you still have one of the largest halibut ever seen or caught.

Cohoangler, I was joking when I said it looked to be 900#. How do I or anyone else on this site know how big it is by looking at a picture? I was thinking back to last year when a guide caught a huge steelhead and many people jumped in and said that it wasn't as big as stated. Happens every time someone posts a picture. The photo judges jump in and say they don't believe it. So, 300 pounds or 986 pounds? I have no idea. I wasn't there and neither were any of you. Responses like the ones we're getting on this thread are the reasons why people don't post pics or reports as much as everyone would like. Always the same negative response.

Been out of town. This is an interesting thread. Although it is unlikely that a 900 pound halibut is swimming around out there, it is certainly possible.
for you photo measurement junkies, here's a couple formulas:
The head length (tip of snout to end of opercular plate) is about 23-26% of the total length.
To calculate dressed weight of halibut from it's length: WN = 6.921x10-6 x L3.24 , where WN=(head-off, eviscerated wt in pounds) and L=(fork length in cm)
Round weight = dressed weight X 1.33
cheers

Originally posted by Hockana: Parker, I sent over the original pics mabe you can get a better pic posted. Sorry. Still looked pretty grainy. Next time, have your buddy jump in the water with the fish! That way, we'll have a good sense of size! Or, next time your buddy catches another 30 pound halibut, just have Doc hold it up. Thing will instantly look like a 900 pound halibut!
