I found that my top guide is missing it's insert last weekend (I only had to break my line twice before I pulled my head out and inspected my equipment).

Here is the damage:

Any suggestions for fixing this, short of sending it back to Lamiglas, would be appreciated. Keep in mind I have absolutely no experience with rod building/repair.

Thanks!

That is a very easy fix it would take no more than a minute to fix.
All you need is a new tiptop, they come in different sizes so you'll need to match/same size you have now.
I may have a replacement you can PM me.
Or go to Greg's custom rod's in Lake stevens or Angler's Workshop in Woodland.
You may even find a replacement at a local tackle shop.
Hope this helps

Not sure where you're located but both of those places mentioned as well as Outdoor Emporium will fix it for you right there at the counter while you wait for under $5. If you want new thread and varnish it'll cost you more and you'll have to leave it with them.

If you do it yourself the tips are put on with ferrule cement which is basically hot-glue. heat up the old tip with a lighter and it should come off. buy a stick of the cement when you get the tip. Heat the new tip then scoop it into the cement. Heat the tip again as you put it onto the tip off the rod.

You'll have approx 30 seconds to line the tip up before it sets. Don't overheat! - just what's necessary. Don't burn the rod! You'll have to cut off an inch and start over.

What? Fix broken gear? This is the perfect excuse to upgrade to a hyper-carbon-fiber platinum-series wallet-buster! Besides, a broken tip is WAY too complicated to repair.

My suggestion: Forget the past. Look to the future... :p

Later.

Abu- Loomis, I hope that if you are in SCHOOL, and it is an institute of higher learning, they are teaching you how to spell PROBABLY!! OK, I know, cheap shot, but nothing irks me more than a college student that can't spell. \:D

I have someone at Greg's Custom Rods fix that for me on at least one rod every year. For the new tip and replacing it will be less than 5 bucks. It normally takes less than 2 mintues to fix once I enter his store.

Barbless-

That happened to me once... the older guy (with the white mustache/beard) @ Outdoor Emporium fixed it for me for free.

Then I had one of my plug rods spit a ceramic insert, but it wasn't the tip guide... Schoff's in Auburn fixed it for cheap!! But they're not around now... too bad... they were great.

You'll have no problems doing it yourself if you get a new tip, the glue, and you have a lighter. It'll cost three bucks for the tip guide, three bucks for the glue, and take three minutes.

I have the glue and a few rod tip guides in my vest, and have changed out plenty of them right on the river bank in less time than it takes to re-rig the rod when I am done.

Good luck!

Fish on...

Todd
