Has anyone had the opportunity to try the same model of G.Loomis rod in both GL3 and IMX? Is IMX worth the approximately 25% price premium?

I currently have a GL3 rod for steelhead but am looking for something beefier for trolling / jigging in Commencement Bay and am looking at the HSR1021C. It is available in GL3 and IMX, hence my dilemma.

Any suggestions or advice are appreciated.

If your gonna troll I'd stay with the GL3.If you were gonna get another steelhead rod I'd go for the IMX for the sensativity.Your not gonna feel it while trolling.Good luck,

P.S. I boondoog out of my sled with both 1141 GL3 and a IMX.I've caught more metal on the GL3 then the IMX,however the IMX just feels better.I have two 1141 GL2's that are boat rod's and there gonna stay that way as I'm not impressed.

+1....I have both HSR1021c in IMX and GL3, for that you're doing(or me for that matter)the GL3 is great, the IMX isn't worth the extra $$$$

For sidedrifting, if maybe you had the extra $$$ laying around, I'd say sure gor for the IMX or GLX over the GL3....but the GL# works great there also IMHO!

If it were me, I wouldn't spend big bucks for a rod you're just going to troll or jig with. For that, get a sturdy cheap rod, and use the extra cash to get a good reel to go with it.

The only application where I prefer an IMX over a GL3 is steelhead drift fishing with light lead, where the extra sensitivity and lighter weight really shine. I think GL3's are a good compromise between the durability of a GL2 and the lightness and sensitivity of an IMX, for most other techniques.

Just my humble opinion.

I've used the same rods in both GL3 and IMX for both gear and fly rods. As Strike Zone mentioned, the IMX is the more sensative of the two.
That being said, I've also broken more IMX rods then any other G. Loomis rods made of different materials. That includes GL2, GL3, GLX, GL4, IM6 and the new streamdance flyrods. I still have IM6 1141's in both spinning and baitcasting that I bought in the early 80's.
The IMX rods are in my opinion more fragile then the GL3's. The IMX rods that I had have now been replaced by GLX's or GL3's via the expeditor warranty program.

I'm with 4salt onthis one, feel doesn't seem to be a requirement you need, go gl2 if you must have a loomis...i have both and for drift fishing they're great.

The 1021C GL3 was the first of several Loomis rods I bought and it's still one of the first ones I grab for trolling. It also works fine for drifting and jigging. I do have a few IMX rods in other styles and they're nice, but for your application the GL3 sounds just right.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input and you taking the time to respond. I am going with the GL3 and the $70 I save will be put to good use on other fishing goodies.
