Dude, I cant believe you busted out a full on abstract. Bravo! Havent seen that since I left the confines of a soft science pursuit back at the university. Now I mostly cracker around the rivers and screw off trying to pay attention at work...but I have changed my line aspirations already....

seriously, this is above and beyond... Id like to fish with you sometime and talk about it...and broads and beer too..if youre able, you know, now that youre married and all.

Thanks Vince... That gives me a little more confidence in trying some of the lines mentioned!

Hooked up,

I was worried the format might scare people off. Not sure why I was worried about that and not about the hundred other freaky things I do on a daily basis.

Starfish....Holy Moly I didn't mention what the lines were rated in the write up. I guess that's why scientific papers shouldn't be written after more than 2 beers. Your right, they were all 10 pound test.

The other areas of interest you mentioned, especially how lines perform at various diameters, were considered. I started thinking about how stretch, diameter, and breaking strength are related, and how I might have found a REAL WORLD application of calculas.

Thanks to everybody for your interest. The guys at SportCo really did try and make me feel like a dumbazz for "wasting my time". If your in Lacey, and shopping Sportsmen Warehouse, let Jason Black the fishing manager know that his contribution is appreciated. He had one of his guys cutting me samples for 30 minutes.

And also, if your heading up HWY 101 just past Little Creek Casino, stop into Verles Boat Shop. Pick up some gear and tell Ron thanks as well for helping me out.

And I'll accept any line samples but prefer to stick to 10 pound test for anything I do this year.

Great job Vince. I was really interrested to see how some of those lines performed although I do not use any of them lol. Let me know when you are going to do this again and I will try to get you some different lines. There are a couple that I use (did not have in ten lb. or I would have donated them as well) that I am very interested to see how they hold up. Again, awesome job! And an abstract to boot. We really need to go fishing together. Maybe I'll see you on the water this weekend at the derby. I'll be in a 16' green lund with a big guy named Chris. Tight lines, Ron

Great job and thank you for sharing. I found the test done on strength after breaking to be very interesting. The test that came out several years back in the saltwater mag also tested abrasion resistence. They would pull the line to a given tension and then a machine would scrape across the line until it broke. As I recall Stren clear blue came out on top for "abrasion resistence".

I also recall that a suffix mono came out near or at the top of the test and when I tried the stuff it broke like thread! lol. I have no idea what happened there....maybe I got a bad batch.

I'm not familiar with all of the lines......I guess they are all monos? t would also be good to see the same test done on braids.

Thank you for constructing an objective test and then creating such a professional report explaining the results.

I think in earlier posts you or someone else mentioned that there is no standard testing by the manufacturers so we are left to rely on them or now view your great results.

By way of comparison a group in Europe, EFFTX, tried to get EU line manufacturers to submit to standard testing and they all refused or found ways to wiggle out, etc and the whole thing fell apart over the past year. They reported on the few who did submit their lines and most did not perform as well as their rated strengths.

Once again, many thanks for the great research project!

Your independent test is very much appreciated.

WTG Vince. Thank you very much for the time and effort that you put into this test. I am curious as to why you would put forth this effort on 10# test as opposed to 12 or 15. I know that you salmon fish quite a bit. In rivers too. Do you use 10# test much? Are you thinking leader material? I use 8 # leader pretty regular (unless I am fishing for salmon in rivers) but 12 or 15 usually as mainline. I have a brand new spool of 15# izorwire for when you wish to test something like that. Thanks again. Your effort is very interesting & much appreciated here.

Nice job, Vince. I wouldn't hesitate to submit that for publication, just as it is.

I also would be interested in results on some of the braids, and would send you samples, except that all the braids I have are in higher test.

Sick, man. Sick.

You are ripe to be bribed by a line company any day now.

I will certainly be trying a couple of lines I wouldn't have otherwise.

Vince! That was awesome!!

I can see that I need to pay more attention to my line choice(s)!

I've never been a huge fan of the palomar knot except for things like spoons and spinners, but I may have to revisit my thinking there, as well.

Great Job! \:\)

It makes a difference which type of Sufix you use. Sufix Seige tested near the very bottom. Sufix Elite however tested right up near the top. I was impressed with its low line memory, softness.

Same with the PLine. The standard line they make tested at the very bottom.

All the brands tested were monofilament.

I don't use braided lines enough to know what to focus in on for testing. Seems that they all are very very strong for their diameters. Differences being on how they lay on the spool, how they cast, and how they hold a knot.

Hey vince very interesting results, as a result I am may try new lines that I have always skipped over. This will be a dramatic departure for me ,and Im not sure if I can bring myself to do it, Maxima has been my brand for 20 years. I think you should talk to the local vendors about reel testing. I would like to be first in line for the reels that would become available as soon as testing is finished...... and then rods ,you are going places

I have always believed Maxima is overrated. Sure it’s strong. Unless you consider that their 10 lb lines are really 13-14. It bugs me that manufacturers advertise their 10 lb line is stronger than someone else’s. Isn't 10 lb line supposed to break at about 10 lbs.? Or said in another way you can't get 10 lbs of shait in a 5 lb bag.

Maybe I can make a .25 diameter line that breaks at 40 lbs strain ands call it the worlds' strongest 10 lb line!

A fair comparison would seem to be 10 lb Maxima Ultragreen to another brands 14 pound line.

I think Vince’s teats are awesome. It would be great if we could also get info on memory and abrasion resistance.

Good work Vince. With all that analytic experience you should be helping Seattle figure out the feasibility of the "viaduct" replacement. They could use your help.

With all that said though, I'll keep using Maxima UG.
