I was fortunate to recieve a call from a friend today while i was on the way back from Selah and a DU dinner/beer pong tournament last night Upon arrival on the island i quickly threw my gear in the car and we headed out to chase some SRCs. We only found one, but he was a beauty. I also got a resident silver and blackmouth. Hopefully I can find this guy again in the summer after he has a few more meals. I love these guys Notice the orange fins... dont know if thats common in the fresh water, but we rarely see it in the salt

The fish we get in southern Hood Canal always seem to have color to them, pretty fish!

what weight rod are you guys using for them??? is an 8wt to heavy??
in the future...hopefully near. i will be buying a 5wt along wth reel and line. that way i can target src's. as im sure the 8wt setup for steelhead will be a little to heavy for the src's

i have caught them on 8wts but it isnt the prefered weight. Most of your sea-runs are going to be around 10 or 12 inches. The size will change as the year wears on but you rarely will find fish over 18 or so. I use a 6wt Xi2. very fast action rod. I am probably going to build myself a 5wt TCR for the salt at somepoint. Or if i find a good deal on a 5wt RPLXi i will buy that. good luck

lol all my rods last longer then that.
well ok most of them. she makes me sell a few of them as i have way to many for her liking. lol
and as long as i even out the buying of rods and the spending of money on her. she is usually fine with it lmfao
now if i can only get her out and fish with me, that would make things awesome.

well i spend alot of money on new rods. and not so much on her. i'll buy a rod then use it for a few weeks then it sits. and i buy a new one lol
so she makes me sell the rods i dont use. i have maybe 50 rods at least.

idk something most of the 5wt i have found are ok. but i dont like the feel of not having a fighting butt. so i think ima have one tied up
and idk about reel. i realy like my okuma helios. but will more then likely just get something a little cheaper. sence its only gonna be for trout.
im not wanting to spend more then 200 dollars though. unless i have a rod tied up.

if its going to be a beach rod exclusively i would get a 6... if you are going to trout fish with it in rivers then a super fast 5 would be your best bet as well... Scott makes a 5wt w/ fighting butt... as does Loomis... Sage made one, the RPLXi but its no longer made

hmmm yeah loomis would probably be the cheaper one huh?? i thnk i can get one of the rod builders on here to tie me up a 5wt with a fighting butt. more then likely a rainshadow blank sence they are cheap. rx7 blanks are only like 50ish so yeah. i was gonna have a 8wt tied up lasy yaer and it was only gonna be 170 with all the nice stuff. then idk about a reel. im liking my helios, but at 145 it spendy for a trout reel. i might get a redington. idk i got a few extra dollars to play with. i just spent 300 dollars on the gf for our one year. so she cant complain now

they are all fairly expensive. The RPLXi i think would be the cheapest because it has been discontinued.

yea.
my first fly rod and reel was a redington crosswater setup. and actually its a very nice feeling rod and reel. the drag was really nice and smooth and handled big chum nicely. the rod was very nice casting as well.
i think i might check out one of the 5wt redington crosswater setups outdoor emplorium sells for 99 dollars.
idk though. i just know that with all the res coho and src talk lately i really want to give it a try. plus i want to get a nice setup for lake and river fishing as well.

wow... look at you go... 300 for the 1yr... damn.
i spent 200 on valentines day and 500 for her bday. dont let your wives or gf's know guys, they will have you sleeping on the couch for spending all you money on fishing gear. hehe actually, the rods i dont use i usually sell and spend at least half the money on her. she understands that hunting and fishing takes up 80% of my time and she is fine with it. so i think its the least i can do to spend some of the money i get for selling the stuff i love so much. on the girl i love so much lol plus if i didnt, she would kill me lmfao

deerslayer,
It appears you're on the young side. Just some news for you in case you weren't aware. No girlfriend or wife makes a man do anything he doesn't want to do. If you do it, it's because you either want to or allow yourself to be guilt tripped into doing it.
Also, no man ever bought too much fishing gear unless his wife/gf has only one pair of shoes. If you like it, and you can afford it, and your kids aren't hungry or shoeless, it's OK.
Sg oh i know. trust me if i didnt want to sell my gear i wouldnt. she just pushes me to it. its like i know i dont need them and i want to get rid of them. but i just cant get around to it. trust me there is no need for the amount of rod i own. i have 4 gl3 1143's and 2 gl3 1263's, a bunch of 1141's of various brands, the list goes on and on. i have a friend who owned his own shop so i had him order me 3 of the same rod for some reason. anyway half the time i feel guilty because i spend more money on fishing then i do my gf. and i spend more of my time fishing as well. she says she doesnt mind, but come on what girl would be truely ok with their bf spending more time fishing or hunting. oh yeah did i also mention that it is a long distance relationship, and i only see her at most once a week for maybe 5 hours.

I use a size 4, 6 or 8. Sometimes even a 10 if they are being picky about the amphipods. Usually i just use my olive/white clouser in a 6 and it works.

probably crazy charlies. Those work as well... You will find that the fly doesnt make much of a difference most of the time.

i went out this afternoon. fantastic day. The wind was out of the south and blowing pretty hard but we fished a sheltered spot and probably caught 20 fish between 2 of us. fun way to spend 2 hrs.

We were on the beach yesterday. I;d say about 50/50. My favorite beaches are accessable by the public but also a long walk. And i have friends that live conviently on those beaches to i can access spots without the long walk. A boat is a much more effective way to fish cuts. 1) because of how much ground you can cover and 2) because of how close to the shore those cuts like to sit. I caught one off my boot laces yesterday. Its a lot easier from a boat. And in my situation using the boat can be a ton easier than dealing with driving anywhere.
