Hi, What size treble hook's should I put on my K15 and K16 Kwikfish's? I am wanting them to be the same size hook's Luhr Jensen would put on them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Good fishing, Dale (SalmonBuster)

My sources in the field have pushed me towards using the Gamakatsu 1/0 "Magic Eye" trebles on K-15's. Bump that up to a 2/0 for the K-16's.

The Owners tend to be a bit on the heavy side.

I use Kwikfish so little that I honestly have no idea if what I'm doing makes any bit of difference, let alone sense. Take that for what it is worth. But, when I do use the K-15's, I don't tend to lose fish, either.

PS. If I were going to be C&R'ing the fish off of those Kwikies, I'd probably switch to a siwash. As is, when I bring out the K-15's, I'm usually out for blood and a fish to keep.

K-15=single siwash off the belly 4/0 / 2/0 owner treble off the a$$.
K-16=single siwash off the belly 5/0 / 3/0 owner treble off the a$$.
Good luck,
STRIKE ZONE

P.S. The siwash off the belly makes for easier sardine wrapping.

PSSSST...

How about the ones LJ puts on them!

Honestly, if a guy's gonna fish these things with trebles, the stock ones are pretty damn good "as is"... very sharp and very strong. No need to modify out of the box and no need for any additional expense or additional labor.

If I were to change anything at all, it would only be to add one more split ring for a little more give/flex when a fish is torquing on the hooks.

Save your fancy replacement trebles for when the stock ones get trashed on a true swimmer that you KNOW catches fish.

Personally I opt for singles on all of my Kwiks, either Gami siwashes or the newer 510's. Way easier to deal with when wrapping plugs, netting fish, and releasing fish.

Thank's STRIKE ZONE and fishNphysician. The reason I am asking is because I bought me some Kwikfish's that don't have the hook's on them. I will give the siwash hook's a try as well. Good fishing, Dale (SalmonBuster)

I tried the single Siwash off the back hook for a season but my hook ratio sucked.

Add a barrel swivel to the backend of your treble hook with a split ring and one to your si-wash om the belly that way when the fish rolls you won't lose it.

I'll usually fish the stock hooks until they have bent out a couple of times.

Springers IMHO like a tighter action, faster vibration, so I'll use larger size of treble hooks. This also keeps them from being hooked deep, wich is nice where selective harvest is desired. Looks more like they are talking on a banana phone so it's eazy to reach down with the extactor and release the hooks from the jaws.

Fall fish seem to have more developed jaw bones and prefer the wider wobble. I like to replace the stock hooks with a similar size; Owner, st-36bc 1/0 on the K15- 2/0 for the K16.

Concur with FnP regarding single hooks. That's all we can use on the Kenai and as long as you don't touch the the rod until it buries you won't miss many. I prefer the single Gamakatsu siwash on the tail for the old school K-16s in size 6/0, either connected via two split rings or one split ring and a barrel swivel. For the K-16X I like the 510 hook due to the narrower butt of that lure, and I like to use a split ring and barrel swivel on this hook because it's shorter than a siwash.

What Parker said, the Gamakatsu Magic Eyes are tough to beat for treble hooks... I use them on everything that included a treble...

Friend of mine insisted on running the double trebles on his Mag Warts last fall. He replaced them with Owner trebles but still had a Trophy steelhead straighten a hook on the upper treble & peel the split ring & hook off the bottom. Anyone else lost fish this way by running 2 sets of hooks?

Sledddder, the answer may be that the rearward hook was hooked in the mouth of the fish, and the forward hook got hooked in the side of the fish's face (this used to happen to me when I used to make jigs with two trebles, one on the end and one in the middle). What happens is that when the fish turns away the second hook gets laid along the face and if it hooks up, you end up trying to drag the fish in almost sideways. This puts extreme pressure on just about everything and still the fish just goes around and around the boat. I quit using forward hooks as a result of these experiences. It's just a guess, but a similar thing may have been what happened to you. I have seen on this board a kwickie tie-up using a length of leader or long swivel used off the mid body eye while secured lightly with a rubber band or lighter leader to the rearward of the kwickie. It seems to me that such a tie-up would aleviate the rigidity of having both hooks imbedded. Just a thought. \:\)
