I had a male sockeye rise to a deer hair mouse on the Arolik last summer. It would have taken it cleanly, but I pulled it away since I was fishing for rainbow and didn't want to waste time playing the sockeye.

I've caught them on Glo Bugs, Dick nights, and Vibrex Spinners in AK. All which have worked on the Newhalem. Has any one heard of the Rake? Would that be concidered flossing? Anyways good luck, Your probably having the time of your life up there. I know I did for a few seasons. I'm married know and can only dream of doing what your doing. Keep up the writing, I enjoy reading your post on A.K . There is a story to be told every day in A.K.

The reds up on the Kenai seem to bite this "fly" really well!

I'm sure this setup would also work for you, Thurl. It's right up your alley! ;\)

LOL.. Sol, This is a personal conquest of mine, I'm not going to put any clients through the agony of trying to get them to legitimately bite \:\)

The bugs here SUCK ;\) I can't picture myself ever getting truly used to them, but I can tolerate em with enough deet \:\)

Meat Pie: Thanks man.. I really wish these mountains and hills surrounding me could talk and tell stories, because everyday that passes, I'm left in total bewilderment of little things that go on around here... Hell, we had a wild rabbit run into a fishing net the other day... Boy was he pissed \:\)

Snort a couple pinner lines of that Buhach powder they burn in the tent camps up there, and deet makes your fly lines slide nicely though the rod guides, too. Sol's Tips of the Day.

I'm a bit confused here. You guys are always bashing the flossers on the local rivers, going on and on about how it's not sporting unless the fish takes it willingly, but it seems like you have no problem with flossing sockeyes in Alaska. What gives? I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers, just trying to figure out your reasoning behind this. Thanks and tight lines.

Hot pink Teeny nymph is a very effective AK sockeye pattern. As others have said, you need to find a place where they hold up in slow water. They won't bite when moving.

Nice try. Tell that to all the dudes who c&r snagged (read flossed) fish all day. Definatly about the meat and not the sport

Anyways, I've had many banner days catching biting sockeye on tiny jigs under super sensitive floats with ironhead. Sometimes tipping them with a little piece of prawn makes a difference, sometimes not. Sometimes 50 or more in a short day on the river. Dial in the colour that they want at that moment, make sure that your float is super tuned to read the tiniest of bites and your set to go.

So as long as someone says they are "meat fishing" snagging is fine? Doesn't make sense.

Twitch a cerise fly...dont strip twitch. The person that sort of "discovered the twitch back in 97' wrote an article for STS about it when he was fishing for sockeye in the sol duc. He started catching all the species of fish in the river with it...the rest is history. But the Cerise long fly ended up catching a boat load. then he moved to jigs.

I've heard the Canadian sportfishers catch them regularly in the ocean, but I'm not sure how.

I know how. It's been posted in the past. We catch the shi% out of the sockeye in the salt up at Port Albernie. Just the other day we were talking about why they would bite up there and not down here. The only answer we can speculate on is related to geography. The sockeye up there are bottled-up very tight in the inlet where the sportfishing troll fishery occurs. I'm not sure why that would make a difference, but the proof is in the pudding.

When I went to the Kenai a few years ago, I fished at Swiftwater Park and I just cussed at them and they were in the mouth. They get scared when you're really cross with them and commit suicide.

Got an 11 pounder near the mouth of the Kenai with this method. I was so drunk and belligerent. It all came together.

Love those memories.
