I had a little old lady Medicare patient tell me this joke in the operating room as she was going under a few weeks back:

On the first day of school, Mrs Baker had her first grade students introduce themselves to the rest of the class, one by one in alpha order. They were to stand up, state their name, where they lived, and tell their classmates a little something about themselves.

Allison... Ashley... Adam...
Bobby... Becky...
Cameron...

and so on.

When they got to the M's, this menacing little boy stands up...

"Hi, my name's Marty.... but the kids all call me Farty... and GODAMMIT that makes me mad!"

Mrs. Baker was aghast. She had been warned about this kid, his foul-mouthed low-life parents, and how this could be a very challenging school year. Not losing her composure, she asked Marty to continue... "So young man, where do you live?"

Marty answered, "I live on Third Street... but the kids all say I live on Turd Street... and GODAMMIT that makes me mad!"

By this time Mrs. Baker had had enough. "Marty, you're staying after school today!"

When the final bell rang and all the other kids were dismissed, she approached the boy sitting quietly and staring blankly at his desk. "Marty, do you know why you're here today?"

The boy hesitated briefly, raised his head, looked her in the eye, and replied, "Yeah... you wanna diddle... but I'm too little... and GODAMMIT that makes me mad!"

I told Achewter that joke in camp last week, and he spent the whole day in the boat coming up with clever little limericks about things that made him mad.

I missed the fish when the rod went down... we done polished off the last bottle of Crown... and GODAMMIT that makes me mad!

As I was driving down hospital hill in Aberdeen after finishing surgery today, I was thinking about the gorgeous fall afternoon, the blue-bird skies, and how pleasant it might have been to chase three tides over mill-pond seas on what should have been the VERY best day of salmon fishing of the season in Grays Harbor. What a glory day it would have been.

Thanks WDFW, thanks.... for an opportunity loss that can NEVER be recovered or replaced. Think about it, folks.... for as long as we live, we will never ever get this day back. EVER! The license-buying public is getting royally screwed. In fairness, there ought to at least be a pro-rated rebate on the annual license to offset the opportunity losses that we are forced to swallow each time WDFW does something like this.

I'm figuring I got 16-18 good years left... MAX! Each and every opportunity to get out and enjoy the activity I love the most is something very precious to me. In this life, the raw truth is that there are no "make up days" for golden opportunities lost... they are simply gone.

My dissatisfaction meter with WDFW is at red-line as I type this. Conservation and allocation recommendations ignored... a forgotten constituency of frustrated anglers.... irreplacable opportunities stolen from the recreational users.... this is the irrefutable legacy of the state's present-day fish managers.

AND GODAMMIT THAT MAKES ME MAD!

Dave will probably outlive my sorry a$$. Just turned 44 on Friday which officially puts me past the two-thirds mark if the family tree has anything to do with it.

Pretty hard to fight genetics. No male in my family history has EVER lived past 65. My oldest brother (47 in Nov) will probably be the first in our generation to try. If he crumps at 65 or earlier, I know I'm toast!

He's the laid-back happy-go-lucky one of the bunch. I'm more of the the spastic, Type-A dude. He is happily married, and I just got raked over in a very stressful divorce. I spend every weekend in horrible I-5 traffic. My personal and professional life is almost constantly running at red-line... each day ends on bare fumes, most often typing something on this keyboard.

So like I said, I'm lookin' at 16-18 good years tops. And with all the $hit coming down the WDFW pipeline lately, it ain't helping matters any.
