I was driving past Heckelsville in the USD, when out of nowhere a 600+ lb. cow elk comes hurtling out of the re-prod and T-Bones my rig. It literally hit me, the damage to the fender was where it plowed into the truck, it's head hitting the windshield which exploded in my wife's lap. Then it rolled down the side of my truck, smashing every piece of metal possible.

A cougar must have spooked it, as it was 11:30ish PM and that thing was running as fast as I've ever seen an elk run. Plus I've heard no less than 3 cat sightings in that area...

It's neck was broken, and before I could get back w/ the 44 mag to make sure it was dead the sheriff got there and put it down.

Ouch. Glad everyone was ok.
I grew up in Michigan and hitting deer was a pain in the ass...but an elk...

Wow.. if that elk was one step faster it would have been real ugly. I've seen what a truck looks like with a cow elk parked in the grill. Its not pretty. One of the buds nailed one a few years back with the suburban. Last thing he asked the state trooper as they loaded him in the ambulance was if he could have the meat. The cop tells him " No, the fish and game will come get it". He says all he remembers about the ride to the hospital is thinking " what a dick".. Thing just cost me 20,000 bucks I should at least be able to eat it.

Yeah...what B-Run said...lucky that thing hit you instead of you hitting it with the front end...600 pounds of meat 4 feet tall is a bad thing to hit in a vehicle.

An old man a couple of cars in front of me hit a deer on 101 right in Olympia several years ago...we pulled over and he was literally shaking...the deer's ass end was mashed, and it was dragging itself around by its front legs, mewling really loudly.

I wish I would have had your .44, or that a deputy had come by...I dispatched that poor animal with a tire iron.

Yeah a friend had to do one in w/ a maul a few years back. Not pretty. We feel pretty fortunate all things considered. Could have been way worse. Finally found a new door from a salvage yard that's coincidentally the same color as my truck, as is the bedside we got last week. Had to buy a new front fender. Here's the progress so far:



He got that dent behind the door pretty well pulled, and everything else is going to be replaced. Still haven't received an eSTAMite on what I should have paid, but I think he's getting me out of there for under 3K including the new windshield.
