Sol's temporary "eyeball avatar" of the guy with the camera pointed backwards got me thinking of some interesting challenges with digital pictures.

Like how do you capture detail on something that has a mirror finish? You end up with a picture of your camera...I'm sure lighting and camera angle would have a huge factor in capturing the image of your subject as opposed to getting the reflected images.

Even photographing blued steel has been a challenge. It also reflects light just like a mirror and poses interesting lighting challenges.

A couple examples of me being stupid with technology.

Trying to capture the detail of the stamping on the ricasso of this knife that is stainless steel. It was outside in natural lighting.

Here is an attempt to capture a blued steel blade under terrible lighting conditions. A chandelier with yellow globes. Outdoors in daylight would have been a better bet.

Try taking pictures of silver and gold plated fishing lures for magazine ads...the way we did it last was to take a picture through a very small opening in a piece of neutral colored cardboard...that way the neutral colored cardboard was what was reflected in the finish on the lures.

Then you have to take the pic at a slight angle so that the flash and/or reflection doesn't show up...

Fish on...

Todd
