First of all, Happy New Year to everyone!!!!
Ok, here is my question. Do you carry a firearm when you go fishing?
I have never thought about it, but a friend at work was saying he always carries a pistol when he fishes. I asked him if it was because of wild animals, and he said partly because of that. But he also said because of some of the idiots out there.
He said he has to draw his weapon once in 2001 because of some overzealous fisherman thought the spot he was fishing was his. When my friend told the guy is was not on private property, the guy immediately got out his filet knife and came toward my friend. My friend warned the guy that he was armed, but the guy continued walking toward him in an aggressive manner. My friend reached under his waders, pulled his revolver and pointed it at the guy The guy did stop, backaway and gathered his stuff and left. My friend does have a concealed pistol permit.
Anything like this happen to anyone else here??? Is it worth it to carry? I also have my concealed permit.

No but your scenario makes me wonder if I should. I've always avoided scrapes with people due in large part to the fact that I don't like to fish where other people do and I'm a pretty nice guy. Over the last decade though I have seen enough human trash and heard of encounters friends have had that make me seriously consider it.
On the other hand, I'm one of those karma guys.....if I buy one, it will invaraibly invite trouble and get myself in a situation I would regret later.

I keep one stashed, not on my person. But I do camp/sleep in some remote spots, and I sleep better with a .45

I have never packed while fishing. But when ever I am up scouting before hunting season, I am always armed.
I have ran in to some things in the woods that makes you a little nervous sometimes.

Yeah, I would definately screw something up if I carried a gun every time I fished. Remote camping trips or really remote streams maybe, but still mostly for animals not people...Later
Jake Neither of you are old enough to legally pack heat anyways so it doesn't matter

No.
Do a search here and on the other BB's to find the other 34 times this comes up...all the threads go the same, every single time, no matter what BB they are on...it's way more entertaining than the "lami v. loomis", "what hook?", "what line?", or "what drift boat?" threads...way more.
Fish on...

I've brought my shotgun and AR-15 on many trips when casting and blasting. Got lots of ducks, one coyote, but no humans..... yet. During duck season the shotgun is always in the boat. From time to time I'll bring along a sidearm, but never consistently. More often than not it is when the boys are with me.

I used to work in some Bear infested remote parts of Katmai National Park, I had quite a few run ins with nasty, bad attitude bears. We could not carry firearms in the park. Pepper spray is worthless on a bear with bad intent. I probably would have shot a few had I been packing. I packed a gun in areas where it was legal, and Bear activity mandated. This picture of the cub and mama was taken after the cub charged, as the Sow watched from the bank. The cub in the pic stood sideways about 3 ft from me, snarling and growling. I was a little more worried about upsetting him more and having mama come down and show us whats up..

I have my permit, but I have never had an encounter while fishing when I needed it. Shooting someone over a dispute of a fishing hole is just not worth it, too many other holes to fish.

if i ever get my permit i will carry. to many bad run ins with people.
ive had guys threaten to drown me, threaten me with thier dogs, actually sick their dog on me, throw rocks at me from across the river, the funny thing is this all happened up at rieter from the intake down to the cable hole.
funny how that works.
the biggest problem is you never know if a person is packing....and you never know how far they are willing to take something...even though you have all intent to walk away sometimes those people wont take "ok im out of here" for an answer
ive had drunks [censored] with me while camping, and scouting, and fishing. ive had people drive buy and shoot bottle rockets at me and roman candles. while i was walking down the road to the next fishing hole.
you never know when things will happen. and it only takesone bad experience to get a bad taste in your mouth. and make the choice to start packing. that one time you have it and need it you will be glad you had it.

oh yeah and you can pack a gun while fishing even without your cwp...but you have to have it out in the open.
and that right there although legal is just asking for problems...not my the law but from fellow fisherman.
not many people are comfortable with guns just being out in the open in places where they arent really needed. and fishing really isnt one of them to have a gun just displayed.
BUT you would get all your fishing spots lmfao

i know that if a big kitty put me on the menu, i'd likely never see it coming until it's too late, anyway. if worse came to worse, i do keep a very sharp tactical knife in the pocket of my vest for a last ditch scenario. hope it never comes to that though.
the only nasty confrontation with 2 legged vermin i've had was this past summer with some hack guide that decided to drop his kicker and pull bait divers in front of me on a 50' wide section of river while i was fishing.
i've never really felt the need to carry, i wouldn't be opposed from bringing a rifle in some areas i fish, though.

I know all to well the kind of scum that haunt secluded spots and act predatory when they think they have someone poor guy outnumbered or outmuscled. So yes, I carry, but I keep it concealed. No sense in them playing nice then running back to their rig to raise the ante. I'd rather them show their stripes before the cards are laid down. Best plan I have is to take their keys and cellphones, toss em in the river, and beat feet.

2ND Amendment...........the right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
It is funny to me that people don't want to carry a gun.
The US Supreme Court will hear a 2nd Amend case, 1st time since 1939, about the individuals right to bear arms. If they don't gives us back our right to carry our guns without worry, they will cause our founding fathers to turn in their graves.
Do I pack heat when I fish? HA! Charlton Heston said it for me, "From my cold, dead hands."

Never packed a weapon on the OP. No need in my oppinion and jsut asking for trouble. Now when I am river fishing in AK that is a different thing. The thought there is never leave home without it. I guess cats are a worry here but I know an old lady(70 years) that beat one off with a walking stick. If she can manage that I should be able to defend myself with a knife or stick.........unless he jumps on my back and the gun would make no matter anyway. Besides, if you had a gun you would have that desire to shoot many of those idiots on the river that so desperately deserve it.

I was fishing a hole in Gold Bar that has a trail that leads out to it that is sponsered by Trout Unlimited well marked and fenced on both sides. Myself and a buddy had walked out there to fish and had been there about a half hour when a crazy older man came out of a house brandishly waving around a two shot Daringer. He was yeliing that we had walked through his yard and were trespassing.
I did not have my pistol with me, but have a concealed weapons permit.
Adrenalin is an amazing thing! You know the fight or flight syndrome. Well my buddy was flying and I was fighting. I yelled in my most fearful voice. "If you miss I'm going to shove the gun up you A$%!" Ok before you reply I was scared and wasn't thinking clearly. It worked and he went inside. I went to the Gold Bar Police station and sat there for over an hour waiting for a King County officer to show because it was on the South side of Hwy 2.
I don't know if anything ever got done about it but they new the guy and had issues with him before.
Ok, so what I'm trying to get at is, if I had my pistol with me what would have happened? I honestly think it would have ended bad!

Yes and no. I do have a CWP. I usually have something hidden in the car and have it handy if spending the night somewhere with boat and gear out. I don't leave anything in the car when in tweaker country. You can guess if I have it ready, or left it home. My looks usually scares the $pit out of anyone willing to cause a problem. if not my looks, the way I swing my fishing rod should. Steve

Camping, all the time. Fishing, twice. Unfortunately we have tweaker prob's down here as well - the game refuge on the Feather river is a spot where stolen cars get stripped and dumped, among other things. I would never let anyone know I had a gun - the only reason to pull it out is to kill. I make sure to have a buddy with me and that's good enough for piece of mind while fishing.
Happy trails, Mike

My friend warned the guy that he was armed, but the guy continued walking toward him in an aggressive manner. My friend reached under his waders, pulled his revolver and pointed it at the guy. My friend does have a concealed pistol permit. I also have my concealed permit. I may have done the same thing, HOWEVER: What your friend did is illegal. It's called assault with a deadly weapon. If you have a CWP, then you are licensed to carry a CONCEALED weapon. The second it is not concealed, you had better be firing it in defense of your life, or you could go to jail. I have heard more than one story of a person being arrested under these conditions. Telling someone that you are "packing" is the same thing as a threat. ...Certainly not worth going to jail for "threatening" a tweaker!

That's why I don't carry. I am licensed too, but I seldom, if ever, do. If I ever have to pull a gun on someone, they are dead. Or, at least shot at. Really bad things happen to those who kill people. Even if it was "justified", the odds of you getting a civil suit slapped against you is, well, damn near 100%. Last thing I want is my financial "fate" determined by a "jury of my peers." Never mind the trouble you will be in if there is even the HINT that the killing was not 100% justified. I would not do well in prison. I'd have to have "BITCH" tatooed to my forehead, and that would NOT be cool! Way too many bad things can happen. I don't like bad things happening to me. Personally, I just try to avoid those situations. Run away. Hand over my wallet, etc. I like the odds of me NOT dying by violent criminals.

I carry at times. There was an incident a couple of years ago where a young cat jumped in the back of a pickup where a guy had put his fish the day before. And beware putting a heater in under the bow area of a drifter. Today found a yellow jacket that was not happy with being disutrbed from its winter nap.

Yes, being from Los Angeles and growing up around cops the first thing I did after getting my WA driver's license was get my CPL. You got a CPL because...????? a) You are from LA? b) You like cops? c) You dislike cops? d) You are holding a chum in your avatar and posting on PP? Paging Emmit Watson. Paging Emmit Watson. We got a live one for you. Speaking of CA and CPL permits.... Set the WayBack dial to 1991 when the Huskies were going to the Rose Bowl. We were staying at a friends Dad's condo in Huntington Beach. Nice place. Any ways, one of the bars we visited was the Goat Hill Tavern. Their claim to fame was having over 100 beers on tap, and the floor was covered in 2-3" of peanut shells. Anyways, a bunch of us Warshingtonians's all invade the place at the same time. First guy gets past the security guard and in the door with no problem. I get to the guard and hand over my WA drivers license. Dude stares at it, and promptly tells me it is fake. His reasoning was that since the guy before me had one, and since I had one, it MUST be fake. (it wasn't fake and I was 21 at the time). He wasn't going to have anything to do with my reasonings and denied me access. Quick on my toes, and knowing that CPL's are all but non-existent in CA, I whip out my WA CPL license, hand it over to him (had my finger prints on it, etc) and loudly proclaim: "Do you know what this is? This is a license to carry a concealed weapon. Goddammit, if the Federal Government can trust me, SO CAN YOU!" The dude at the door's jaw just dropped. He looked at that license. Looked at the finger prints on the license, flipped over and back a few times and as loud as he could humanly yell to everyone in the bar, said: "HEY BOB! CHECK THIS SHIAT OUT. THIS GUY HAS A PERMIT TO CARRY A GUN!!!!" Every head in that bar turned and a looked at me and my buddies. No one said a word, but the dude at the door smiled and PROUDLY let me in the door! No free beers, but I don't think anyone flipped us any crap that night either.

Sorry Hohbomb but reread the orig post, the guy continued coming on even after he had been ___warned___that the guy was armed. I give the guy credit for not killing the dumbarse, really lucky guy. I just pack a 12 gauge when I am out and about. Gives me peace of mind. Sorry yourself. You miss my point. "Warning" someone that you are armed = "threatening" someone that you are armed, and is illegal. It's called "brandishing" when you "unconceal" your "concealed" weapon. If the dude's life was truly threatened, then he has the right to kill in self defence.

So how close would you have to let the guy threatening you with a fillet knife get before defending yourself? 20ft, 15ft, 10ft, 5ft?

Like I said, "I may have done the same thing"...
What was done could constitute a threat. No one "defended himself", otherwise someone would have been shot.
If I was there, and felt my life was in danger, and was "packing" legally, I probably would have killed the guy with the knife. If not, I may have "brandished" my weapon in a threatening way and scared him off. Perhaps he would have stabbed me.
Only a judge/jury can determine how close the guy with a knife would have to get to constitute a "threat to my life". Sufice to say, if the guy with the knife is dead he may have a hard time convincing said judge/jury that he was NOT threatening my life. I believe in WA the law is written such that dude's life wasn't being threatened if he could have walked away and didn't...

Only a judge/jury can determine......
Enough said. My father was a long-time trail attorney in this state. I've heard more whacked-out jury stories than I can shake a stick at. Not too sure why I'd shake a stick, though. Trust me, the *last* thing you want is to be in front of a "jury of your peers" in this state. Seriously. Think about who really ends up on jury duty and makes it to a trial. Scary!
