Love the more remote trail heads in Alaska, spent summer of 2006 having some Kenai and Twenty mile fun and many other systems as well.
We all meet up in downtown Anchorage 2 off my buds Moose and Bear guides they pull open the tailgate of the pickup and there is 5 or 6 over sized Cosco style plastic containers.
First words out of there mouth is Choose your Candy I think the baby was a 454 C. He states anything under a 44 mag shoot first in the temple or under the chin not for the Bear for the Goofs they will soon be eating! lol I new this would be a fun adventure.
Handguns I respect all and any but there could be a better example of angling.
In a sled and drift boat the H-K 9 shot/heat shield 3 inch mags settles all and every game in town and there great can openers on Tubs as well! Great on passing waterfowl as well.
Have 100's of Pictures of Bears some eating folks as well as climbing over boats but my crayon is dull as well as my ability to post pictures! LOL

I pack all the time for self defense purposes only. Don't pull it out unless you're going to use it. Walk away every time and defend yourself if needed.

I have my permit and carry whenever fishing or hiking - for bears, cougars, tweakers and (if in Eastern Washington) rattlesnakes. Only once have I pulled it - on a hike above highway 2 after hearing what my buddy and I believed to be an angry bear we must have disturbed. We never saw the bear, but because I was carrying and drew it we felt comfortable enough not to run which may have prevented a chase response.

Plunking for Spingers at Camelot last year and had some crazy start shooting in my directions. I yelled to cut it out numerous times and ended up running for cover and waiting for the sherif department. This took over 10 minutes and in this time had around 50 rounds shot with in 50ft of me. When the Sherif arrived SHE went and had a talk witth the gentleman then returned and told me he was shooting in a different direction and the splashes in the river were probably fish not bullets. I told to her to !@#$# off!! and I didn't appreciate my tax dollars being spent protecting meth addicts and I felt unfortunate for her that it was probably her dad. At that time another officer showed up and then I became the problem. With all that said, I've concluded that the only good thing that happened was I drove away. If I would of been packing and this crazy would of came in sights and I shot him I'm pretty sure with how the sherif department handled it I would have been sitting with Bubba talking about the good ole days. The point that I wanted to bring up is I thought I could rely on law enforcement and it seemed they were just pissed off that they were called and didn't want to do paper work. One of the last comments that the officer made was. I can't do anything because a jury would convict him. I do carry a side arm on me occasionally at different areas were there is allot crime but I mostly rely on prays and I sure hope no one gets caught in this situation. I should probably tell where this occured. Camelot area on the lower cowlitz .

Just for the record: Because its very skewed here in this thread...

You do not need a CWP in Wash when hunting, fishing or camping. Also going to or from. You can have it fully loaded and concealed.

Shoot low boys, there comin in on Shetlands!

Yes..i have seen court paperwork (Judgement and Sentences)..where a person brandishes a weapon/firearm and doesn't use it...the victim calls law enforcement and the perpetrator is then sentenced and convicted of felony Assault 3rd..if you pull it, it seems as if you've got to use it...kind of funny to think about. If that guy were to call law enforcement ..get rid of the knife, tell a story about an argument you two had, tell them he was the victim...you get arrested searched..and most likely get convicted of a crime..if not.. you will have had to spend a lot of money on an attorney to get the case taken care of...a lot of money..probably in the $1,000's at least...court appointed attorneys will only get you the previously mentioned Assault 3rd..and yes I have seen it occur (on paper) multiple times...

If you display "brandish" a concealed weapon and de-escalate the threat, no reasonable LEO will arrest you for doing so. As long as you can articulate your actions as self defense, you should be in the clear.
If someone is me with a filet knife and displays any notion that he/she will use the weapon against me, I will put some rounds down range.

Read some articles from the american hunter magazine (armed citizen).

if im going to a very secluded area during duck season, i'll pack the old mossberg with me, but other than that.. no i dont. Some of these tweaked out people around here that think they own the river are just crazy! i still hav never felt the need to carry a weapon with me when fishing around dozens of people.

I carry a loaded brain, and a fishing rod, when I go fishing.

Both much more powerful tools than firearms.

Fish on...
