Hey all,
Im in the market for a new truck and have the choice down to the new Tundra or the Gmc Sierra All-Terrain. I really think the interiors on the GM's are top notch but the exterior is just kinda bland. I really like the look of the new Tundra and that 5.7L with 381hp and the 6spd auto is sweet. Any recommendations or suggestions out there?

I asked a similar question to the owner of the shop that has been taking care of my 4-5 vehicles for years now. When I ask what car I should get next he said " It really doesn't matter as long as it is Japanese" This will anger those who say "buy american", but I am just passing along what I was told.

I'd go with the Toyota. I pretty much agree with the advice that ronnie received. I don't care about the looks, just how long it will last.

And Ford is a four letter F-word.

My '97 T100 just turned 200K. Thought about trading it in for a new one but looking at the prices I think I'll shoot for 300K first.

I've had no engine problems at all. Last year I had to replace the rear axle which has been the only significant repair other then the occasional broken window-[censored] tweakers!

My friends all drive Chevy's and Dodge's. They are nice but my next truck is a Tundra!

But if you decide to go diesel, the Yota isn't an option yet and it goes Dodge, Ford, GMC in that order. Actually the new Ford Powerstroke 6.4's are sorta untested so I might hold off. I have a '06 F-250 and I've really put it to the test and have had zero problems at all except a tail light that burnt out, but that was made by Sylvania.

Yota or Cummins. Not necessarily in that order.

Ok, gotta stand up for the Chevy/GM guys. I have a Silverado 2500HD Duramax crewcab. The towing capacity is awsome! The six speed allison is a fantastic tranny. Pulling my boat the thing doesnt even come out of 6th on most hills. With my 5th wheel it may drop to 5th overdrive but only goes down to 4th on longer steep passes. I am not a big dodge fan although I think the cummins is a good motor, just dont care for the rest of the truck. I like Fords ok too but their 6.0 diesel was a FLOP!! Time will tell on the new ford motor. Toyota builds nice truck but they only go 1/2 ton which pretty much leaves them out of the larger trailer/5th wheel market. I have owned toyota cars before and have been please with them. It all depends on you needs. As for me, I love my duramax.

Yeah the Dura/Allison isn't all bad. I've just been in too many Cummins rigs w/ 300,000 + miles on them, and they still purr like kittens. The Dodge manual tranny is pretty bulletproof as well, although the automatic's seem to have issues.

If the Duramax show's some longevity they might be worth another look.

As for non-diesel trucks I'd never buy anything other than a Toyota.

If you can wait a couple years GM is coming out with a diesel for their half ton trucks.

The problem with the Duramax/Allison set up is that you have quality Engine and tranny pushing around GMC junk. An Engine's no good when your wheels have fallen off and your rear differential is scattered in a trail behind you.

What stam and others have already said. My '91 Toyota 4x4 still drives like new. Toyota sent me a couple post cards for maintenance items that they fixed for free (head gaskets/steering shaft). Had the heads rebuilt on my nickel when the head gaskets were replaced. When I asked my mechanic if I should rebuild the engine as well, he laughed and pointed out the original hone marks in the jugs. Should be good for 300k. Paint and interior are still in great shape.
