Not sure were it is legal to retain wild steelies in Jan, but this one sure got a little extra rubbing for a pic. Found this on a guided ebay listing . Apperently this guide needs some ideas on the proper way to release wild metalheads. I wonder if all the wild fish he catches get the same treatment once they cross over the gunnel of this crackers boat!

Dang, look at his eye. That buck is really struggling. Cool looking pic though, almost guaranteed he hit the bottom of the boat and flopped around before the release. Its hard to hang on to a steelie that size usually.

When the fish are that big it is hard to get your hand around the wrist of the tail period, let alone hold it. I would not know anything about that since I have never held a fish that big, but I heard about it once.

Looks like a beautifull first steelhead. WTF any how, you guys need to go get some of your own.

Lets get real here guys. I dont agree either, but look at the smile on the kids face. Looks like he and dad with first big steelie. I am sure they will remember it forever.

Nothing elite about caring about a rapidly diminishing resource. Just ,y himble opinion. The kid should be getting a lesson in proper fish handling and respect. Nice fish though,treat it as the jewell it is.

How do we know that the guides fish was not captured in a C&R net? Looks like a steep banked and deep river, does Sparkeys law apply to the river and fish in question? this witch hunt bs is getting old, no need for it.

Come on guys, you can all get all pissed off about it, but it's a father taking his young son out on a trip that neither of them will forget for a while. I bet the fish was released, and as gilly mentioned, it looks like a steep bank so they couldn't pull up to shore to land it. I don't think they bonked it, the dad is holding it properly (better then the boga grip pic) and the kid who probably has no idea about how your supposed to handle wild steelhead is rubbing his fingertips on the fish.

I would assume it was captured in a C&R net , but why hold it up in this fashion? I guess its understandable Gilly after your avatar looks like a nate well out of the water.

Funny my kid wants to take pics and bonk EVERY fish we get , he doesn't know wild from hatchery jack from adult. Thats my job to teach him , respect and restraint. He is 4 and I will be damned if he is goiong to sway my judgment. Smiling or not.

Besides once again I am sure we all have probably taking a little to long getting a picture off, but to use it as an advertisement photo. Thats just fuking dumb! Picture that kids face when he has kids and can come back to that stretch of water and get his kids first "big one". and so on and so on. Thats whats it is really about. His dads story wont be forgotten and besides the fish can always get bigger as the years go on without a pic to keep the "fish tales" in check.

It looks to me like the guide has it under control,looks like he is poised to take fish and release him. i understand they should not have taken him out of the water but i think we all have done things we look back on and say wtf was i thinking. who are we to judge everyone's actions. i also want to add i have a 8 year old boy who would bonk everything if i let him. seen many of tears on his face after letting some of his prize fish go..give him a break.

Maybe they ate it.....no come to think of it that would be beyond the realm of believability.

While probably not the best way to do it ... I don't see the need for a witch hunt here either. Personally, I wouldn't one one over the boat ... especially a bigger fish that is hard to hold onto as they often can slide out of the tail grasp fairly easily ... but at least it's not by the gills or vertical either.

As for the youngster ... give him a break, do we know if the guide suggested to the young fella after the picture to handle as little as possible? Maybe, maybe not, doesn't really matter though. That smile says it all, and he likely knows no different.

I could go on ... but won't, but all of suddent here seems to be this move to go find pics on the web to bash. In a few cases of extreme behavior, I'm for slapping a wrist, but there's lots more to worry about out there as well

The down-rolled eye we see in so many pictures is evidence that a fish is still neurologically intact. It happens because the brain is still trying to maintain the eye's natural position in space... by that I mean the top stays on top and the bottom stays on the bottom. All vertebrate eyes do this, including yours.

If you are having a conversation with a friend, and tilt your head back into a chin-up position, your eyes will naturally roll downward to maintain their position in space (ie looking at your friend). If you tilt your head to the left (like in Lund's pic in the new STS article) your eyes automatically tilt to the right in an attempt to keep the 12:00 meridian of the eye at 12:00 in space.

The same thing happens to a fish when you pose it for a pic. If the fish is maintained in a natural position in space( held perfectly horizontal, back up, belly down) then the eye will be looking straight out to the side, just like on a free-swimming fish. That straight-out stare does NOT mean it's dead. The best clue you have in this instance is that the pupil will still be very large and shaped like a big fat watermelon seed.

If however you tilt that fish off axis ( e.g. rolling the belly slightly toward the camera to accentuate the chrome snowbelly effect for the final pic) then the eye closest to the camera will appear to roll downward. It is simply trying to maintain its position in space. The opposite eye will actually be rolled upward by an identical amount. A little off-axis tilt, a bit of down-rolled eye... the greater the off-axis tilt, the more the eye rolls down.

If you take your pic with the fish laying completely on its side in the shallows, the down-rolled eye is VERY exaggerated. That's because the body is angled 90 degrees off its normal anatomical orientation. The eye will try to roll downward 90 degrees to compensate for the unnatural body position, appearing partially buried into the socket. If you could view the eye closest to the gravel, you would see that it is rolled upward in an equally exaggerated fashion. Again, the brain is just trying to keep the eyes oriented in space.
