For the next few weeks, the waters off Tacoma should be the hot spot for salmon anglers in Puget Sound. Fishing for hatchery chinook salmon, better known as blackmouth, reopens Saturday in Marine Area 11.

“These winter blackmouth are probably the feistiest fish in Puget Sound,” said Jerry Skeen, who has run Capt. Jerry’s Charters for 25 years.

Bill Dever, who runs Puget Sound Salmon Charters, has fished the area for 17 years. He said the best fishing will be in the coming weeks.

“Earlier in the day and earlier in the season, the better chances you are going to have. The closer we get to spring, the fish seem to dissipate,” he said.

“There are so many places to fish around Tacoma that sometimes I don’t where to go,” Dever said.

Hint: If you don't kill fish that weigh less than the downrigger ball they get big.
