Spent a bunch of time on the Skagit with a spey rod and did not touch a SH this season. Interested if anyone hooked into a native on a fly this season, maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Hey Marcel, good to meet ya this weekend and a bummer that you didnt hook up this year. We talked about this a bit at camp but with me having a few too many beers, well who knows:) Water temps are HUGE IMO in the winter. April is the prime month on the fly up there and since we have no April it figured to be a tough go for the fly guys. I gave up fly fishing for them a few years ago after beating myself up for many years...now if you are talking summeruns on the fly thats a WHOLE nother story...cheers

dbl spey,

Don't sweat it. It's been a tough season. All winter long I caught one kelt in January and one native fish on the coast a little over a week ago. Steelheading is always just one more cast from a tug. While April is good on the Skagit system, so is March. It just helps when there are decent numbers of fish around.

Sad to say, I didn't fish the Skagit this year. Since there was limited time available, I thought it would be more crowded than usual, so I spent my time on the coast instead.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Thanks for your thoughts. Funny thing, on the Skagit this year seemed 1/2 as busy as last year. Maybe I need to spend more time on quite streams...
