Just wondering what was the outcome of the meeting today regarding salmon seasons on Willapa and Grays Harbor. Anyone have a report?

It should be good news for sports, esp when you consider the constraints presented by the run-size forecasts for GH... but I will not commit to an official statement just yet. Even though we have a verbal agreement, I don't want to have to make a retraction two weeks from now if something goes sideways at PFMC!

Lord knows we've been down that road before.....

One more local meeting left to discuss coastal fisheries... specifically the ocean salmon season out of Westport.

Well here's the scoop for the Grays Harbor fall salmon fisheries. There are no chinook or chum to harvest (total runsize forecasts are below the basin-wide escapement goal). There are no wild coho available in the Hump... again run-size forecast is well below escapement goal. Small numbers of wild coho are available on the Chehalis side... opportunities for harvest are available BEFORE the bulk of the later-timed wild stock shows up in the system.

For the most part, this is meant to be a hatchery coho show for 2008, and the regs reflect that objective.

We got back two weeks in September, but paid for it with an area restriction in MA 2-2 to reduce impacts on chinook. The bank fishery at Morrison Park is a go in Sept as well. These are significant victories, folks. This will help the recreational community to make a smooth uninterrupted transition from their fishery in Willapa Bay into Grays Harbor once the nets take over WB.

Some of you might complain that harvest opportunities are too stingy. Seriously, you need to understand that this is a year where conservation is a priority. Every attempt was made to maximize the take on hatchery coho without pummeling other stocks that probably won't make escapement as it is. Be thankful that we are even allowed on the water to fish. Be extra thankful that we are on the water for a full season. Coastal WA will be the envy of the entire west coast!

Here are the details:

MA 2-2 opens Sept 16 - Nov 30, 2 adult salmon, only one wild coho, release chinook and chum. Limited fishing zone Sept 16 - Oct 15 east of a N-S line from Marker 35 (tip of Moon Island) to cell tower at O'leary Creek. NO FISHING WEST OF THIS LINE.

Chehalis R. Aberdeen bridge to Lakeside (Lakeside - Morrison Park - Gateway Mall) Sept 16 - Sept 30 bank only, single hook, barbless, NO BAIT, 2 adults but only one wild coho, release chinook and chum.

Chehalis R. Aberdeen to Porter, plus tribs (Wynoochee, Satsop) Oct 1 - Oct 15
2 adults but only one wild coho, release chinook and chum.

Chehalis R. plus tribs Oct 16 forward, 2 adults, release chinook, chum, and wild coho.

*****

Humptulips River Oct 1 - 15, single hook barbless NO BAIT, release chinook, chum, and wild coho. From Oct 16 forward, bait will be allowed.

i'm thankful for having coho to chase this year(hopefully it'll be better than last year's terrible runs in the lower chehalis tribs), but what the hell ever happened to the chum runs? in the early '90s you could walk across their backs in the satsop, they went into sort of decline in the mid 90s and then came back for a couple years('02-03 i think). i fished the satsop last year in places that would normally be packed full of them and didn't see a single live chum, and only a handful of dead ones.

let's see them blame that one on the sportfishers...

It was a collaborative effort, Fred... the group's best attempt at maximum time on the water, reducing impacts on a chinook run forecast below goal, allowing the harvest of a limited forecast surplus of wild coho, while maximizing harvest opportunity on a healthy forecast of hatchery coho.

WDFW came to the table with the idea of a limited area in MA 2-2 starting at Stafford eastward and a start date of Oct 1.

By the end of deliberations, we ended up with an additional two weeks on the water.... mind you, the best two weeks, hands down.... and an additional 5 miles round trip to troll.

That's one "POS" I am more than happy to swallow.... but you know those damned Orientals.... they'll eat just about anything! ;\)

It's about time someone exercised a little common sense on that circus.

Kind of reminds me of an old Elton John song he wrote for the Lion King...

I can't believe you actually watched the Lion King.

Fish on...

Todd

P.S. FP, were you at the meeting making your wants and desired heard? Have you been taking time to work with the various stakeholders to come up with fisheries that can please as many people as possible, while not putting the runs in danger?

If so, then I guess you'll have to either come up with a better idea next time, or be better at getting your idea heard.

If not, then you're definitely the one who needs to shut the fu.ck up, and quick.

I smell a lock in less than three posts.

Damn... why do all the good GH threads always end up getting locked?
