You can have the best camera in the world, but if you have a crappy lens you are still going to end up with shiatey pictures!

I have the Cannon SD800 and really like it so far. I'm no great photographer but it still takes nice shots. I personally think that Coley's DMC-LX2 takes better photos but that might be because of the person behind the lens. I don't have quite his experience since I'm usually the one holding the fish and not the camera if you know what I'm sayin'... (I wish)

Why do you think the fisherman is cropped out of most of the photos. The internet community at large doesn't need to see your ugly mug more than is absolutely necessary \:\)

Really nice images. thanks for sharing.

Slow exposures in low light are a problem for many digital P&S models. I've found the LX2 performs extremely well at ISO 100 in good lighting conditions, It is very poor at ISO 400 or higher.

ISO 200 images are OK but I prefer to keep it as 100.

I definitely agree about shooting the highest resolution jpeg instead of RAW for anyone that is not concerned with print publication.

You can get about three times as many images shooting JPG vs RAW on a card of the same size. RAW takes about 6 seconds to read the LX2 files to the media cards that I am using.

I went by the Woodinville Costco and they had sold out the Panasonics and are awaiting a shipment of the newest model.

As Parker says, most folks don't need all the bells and whistles that the LX2 offers. I personally don't use most of them.

I shoot in Programmed (Priority mode) most of the time. I use the Auto mode when I want to set the lens for a smaller F-Stop to get greater depth of field. I have the Aperture set for F8 most of the time for getting sharp closeups, but the camera will be shooting at a slower shutter speed which might be a problem with camera shake.

It is absolutley necessary to read the manual for these P&S models, they have so many instructions compared to the old days when we just drops a roll of film in the camera.

C22,

I don't think you'll be disappointed with any of the cameras that have been raved about on this thread. There are plenty of online retailers that are still sellling all of these models.

Just talked to the boys in NYC, they have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 for $335 in silver or $340 in black. That includes shipping to your door..... applause

No, I have no idea about them. I generally buy most of my stuff off eBay now and have yet to be screwed. For the most part, I'm buying from people with a high number of previous transactions and a good feedback rating. You'll find that many online retailers also have "eBay stores". I just think eBay is the quickest way to find items from a variety of sellers.

I really doubt you can go wrong with any of the cameras recommended on this thread. The only thing to watch out for with online purchases is making sure you don't get "refurbished" products if that is important to you. That, in itself, shouldn't necessarily be a deal-breaker but the retailer should be upfront about whether the product is truly "new in box" or refurbished. Good luck with the purchase. Unfortunately, most of the problems with digital cameras are caused by the owner (I even managed to drop a perfectly good one off a huge cliff on Cypress Island... never to be seen again).
