Wow. Page 10.

This thread is rapidly approaching "dumbest thread ever" status...I bet that there are managers down in Olympia reading this and spitting coffee all over their monitors...and the best part about it is that it will probably make it to 20 pages, and they'll spit tomorrow's coffee on their monitors, too.

Kevin, believe it or not, I think my not-too-subtle hints that this thread is a fuckin disaster are about the best contributions made on this thread since about page 3...this thread should have stopped then, because it wasn't so hot yesterday, and it's so far from reality now that it's just good for comic relief.

Do I need to write another poem?

Fish on...

There is supposed to be one on HWY 3 in Gorst according to a thread on a different board. Hubby wanted directions to it, but the thread got locked before I could get an answer for him.

Of COURSE I bought his story that his single male coworkers living in Port Orchard and commuting to Bremerton could use a little pick me up.

Why not.... Kevin, if your theory was correct about every biter getting caught you would be correct, but it can't be. If it was, one would have to assume the fish made it up to bonneville in one day or only bit on certian days or certain times. I am not ready to agree with either of these yet, though it is possible. If it was for a small time period, then the people on the river who could get the bait in quickly for a second fish, would suck up the season quicker. I won't even address issue if fish bite on one day and not on another day.
The quota did, however, have the effect of spreading out the wealth, there is no doubt about it. I remember fishing the cowlitz during the heyday. There were certain drifts that would produce fish after fish, regardless of who would fish it. Inevitable, some unemployed yahoo and 10 of his buddies would park everyday in the best holes and catch and release all day. If they decided to catch a limit, they would stand there until one of their buddies took there place. If you tried to step in, threats of violence were common. I have fished all day waiting for a spot to open, then finally, at the end of the day got obnoxious, squeezed in and hooked a fish on the first cast. In places with high effort, it really is nice to get people off the river, especially if your theory is correct and someone else really will get that fish.
This year the one fish limit may not have worked as well as hoped, but I am sure it extended the season, and at worst gave more people the opportunity to take one home.
Lastly, I bet you think that if you were allowed to, you would have been able to get two fish. Since not every boat on the river was catching fish at the exact time that would mean you believe you would be able to do something special to make those fish bite. Go ahead, take credit where credit is due, you probably really are better out there most of theother guys.

I agree you never have more than a theory unless you have data.

Believe it or not I took a couple years of calculus, graduated college, and am getting close to graduating from law school (now the jokes should really start). So I know a little about addin, subtractin and the difference between scientific and anecdotal evidence.

I am also not a guide. While I do know Kevin, I probably only see or talk to him a couple times a year. However, I know him well enough to know that all the of the false assumptions everyone immediately made about him with this post were entirely unfair and unfounded. He's a great guy and knows more about what's going on with our fisheries than any of the internet-know-it-alls that have so classlessly called him an idiot. I think that fact would become immediately obvious to anyone that fished with him.

The fact is even the Oregon Commission said the one fish bag limit would perhaps create a impact reduction, at most, of 5-6% in the Columbia, and 4% for the Willamette. So you can preach the fact that 2+2=4 and 1+1=2 all day long, but if it were really that simple then a one fish limit should have reduced the harvest by exactly 50% percent. Clearly, the Commission didn't think that.

The Commission did, however, HOPE the limit change would HELP prolong the season. I agree with Kevin that the effect of the limit change, when the effort is as high as it is in the Columbia, has a negligible effect on harvest and probably did little to extend the season.

Obviously, when you have a quota, and everyone gets to go out and catch some, there is nothing to complain about when the season gets cut short because the fishing was so good and the quota is used up. That doesn't changed the fact that more fish were caught in that time period that what went over the dam; that we took a huge hit out of the front of the run, rather than spreading our harvest out throughout the season; and that the results of this season showcase what an impact our pressured sportfisheries have on these fish.

What I think about this whole issue is that limit changes (that many of our fisheries may go through in the upcoming future) are never going to be very successful in heavily pressured fisheries if we dont control the the number of anglers on the water -- either by limited entry, closing more days during the week, or more strictly controlling the number of fish a person can harvest from particular watersheds. In many of our fisheries, it is the the number of people fishing that impacts the fish much more than the number of fish people can take home.

Okay that's that my last swing at the horse.

Go ahead an call me an idiot too and enjoy the black-paged reality that is PP.

Dom

I want to bonk the hell out of that blue fish!

I give up trying to read all of this. But It's a fallacy to claim that all "biters" will be caught. Given that the rest of the argument cannot hold.

Right across from the Texaco Station on the water side of Hwy 16.......Don't ask me how I know this, but "Pastie" Tuesday's and Friday's are the best days to admire capitalism at it's finest!

WASL Test- Fishing section

The limit is 1 fish -> 11 anglers catch 11 fish and go home
The limit is 2 fish -> 11 anglers catch 22 fish and go home

Does the limit of 1 or 2 make a difference in the amount of fish caught?
