Borrowed the little missus's Canon DVD cam for some shrimpin footage over the weekend. Book said to "finalize" the disc to play it on a regular DVD player......I went ahead and "finalized" it, and it won't play on my DVD player, nor can I pull it up on the 'puter? Maybe my film career has been "finalized"? Is there a 10-step program for idiots such as myself?

Question. What software were you using to make the DVD? Did the video get compressed to MPEG4? Do you still have the origional video on the cam corders DVD? My bet is the Cannon cam corder came with software to make a disk usuable in your DVD player. The other question is what type of DVD player do you have. I know that most Sony players won't play home made DVDs and their CD players won't play home made CDs.

That's probably where I screwed up Stever. I finalized the disc in the camcorder per the manual, which said I could then insert the same disc and play it on anything. i probably should have plugged the USB cable to the camcorder, and like ya say fire off the Canon software that cam with it and see what shakes out.

I just wonder how many trips it's gonna take for me to figure it out.....might have to loan it to Sol for "home-purpose use" so he can figger it out for me ;\)

I got an 18 year old kid you can borrow for the next 4 years or so. He can figure out anything that involves a computer as long as it will be useless in helping find a job in the future. Your problem sounds like something he would be a pro at.

I'll put him on the Greyhound collect. If I tell him your taking him out to pizza he will no doubt find you..

Good luck !! no hurry sending him home !!

No loss. Knowing you guys the entire video segment was probably filmed pointing the viewfinder at the subject matter instead of the lens.

I've dealt with a lot of optical media, so you actually raised more questions than the one you put out there. First, does the disc play in the camcorder? If not, you probably screwed up the disc. Also, I've also heard that some DVD camcorders need to be plugged into the wall charger to finalize. It won't work on the battery. Second, how old is your DVD player? Older models won't play all formats of DVD recordable discs. Third, what formats will your computer DVD player accept? Same problem as the DVD player. DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW all make a difference, so you may have a combination where the DVD you make in your camcorder is just not compatible with the players you tried.

Sorry for hijacking the thread with some helpful advice :P

Yours is sitting near my front door waiting for The Ball's to show up tonight. It did not disappear.

But as others have stated, you did it wrong. It don't work. Never did.

Thanks for your highjack DiverX
The disc does play in the camcorder, and it's a "DVD-RW"..... I figger if was corrupt to begin with, then I shouldn't have been able to view my Spielberg-like film on the playback through the camcorder. I did plug it into the wall charger before I "finalized" it per the manual.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm not going to be able to plug-n-play this thing on an occassional basis without edumacatin myself and messin with it more ahead of time!

Try taking it to some electronics store like Best Buy or Fry's and see if you can get the disc into one of their floor model DVD players or computers. Those should be able to handle DVD-RW discs. Just FYI DVD-R discs are the most compatible with older DVD players.
