When I was about 7, we were at Coplais and my Dad was surf fishing. I was in the surf behind him, fell and got caught by the rip. He grabbed the hoody on my sweatshirt as I passed him. I almost slipped out of it just before Dad grabbed me around the chest and hauled me in.

I got caught in a Rip tide bodysurfing when I was 14 years old in Monterey Bay, I luckily remembered to swim out to sea with the current and swam back down a little ways to get out of it and then swam back in ,but the feel of that current was so strong , I felt like I was being sucked down and out by a giant Vacuum, Real scary as I remember during the summers there that dozen or more people expired to them each year up and down the coast

I'm sorry to hear of such a tragic experience.

I may be paranoid, but I wear an inflatable whenever I am in a boat, or wading.

An old fishing partner of many years ago, had a wise comment regarding fishing in our chilly waters.

"Always wear your life jacket, that way your wife won't have to wait seven years to collect your life insurance".

And my comment is, if you are wearing it, the above advise might not be the final outcome.

An observation that drives me nuts is seeing an adult without a PFD on while their child is clad in one in a boat or canoe.
