I am in the finishing stages of wrapping my DB oars. I have sprayed shellac on the rope. I have the black Cataract oars. I am not sure what they are made of. Is it a good idea to spray a little shellac on the oar shaft as a protective layer? Thank for your advice--- B. Lade

I would say probably not with the shafts being fiberglass. As is they're damn stout and adding some shelac probably wouldn't advance your cause a whole lot.

my 2 cents. 2cents

Go to the Cataract site and contact them on how to re-finish your oars. I did it last year, but can't remember what I used.

If they are not rough at all, I wouldn't do anything. I've got two sets of cataracts and my shorter pair are the old "sprial wrap" design. Cataract recommended I finish them with Helsman varnish. I hit them with some 400 grit to knock the slivers off, then sprayed on two or three coats. It worked great.
