I have a Browning semi auto in 30.06 built in 1959 and it's my baby.

I went target shooting and when I got home we had to leave so I did not get to clean the rifle until a week later. When I went to clean it the side of the rifle where the shells eject had minor surface rust, urrrr

After scrubbing the rust off with Hoppies once and a gun degreaser another time and then re applying oil the surface rust comes back in a mater of 2-3 days.

What do I need to do to totally eliminate the rust and keep it from coming back?

Gun oil and steel wool.

Rust will always re-appear there from now on. You just need to always keep an eye on that spot and make sure it's always oiled and cared for.

Aside from re-finishing the metal, there's no real way to prevent rust from coming back to that spot.

I have had that happen many times. Like parker said you will always have a problem in that spot. Keep it oiled and it will be OK. One of my tricks is to collect those small packets of silica that come in packaging materials. They are moisture absorbers. I have them scattered all over my gun safe. It seems to be working. On a humid day some of those rust spots would come back, but not now with the silica apackets.

get a golden rod for your safe or leave the light on, warmth is the key to rust free. Oil OIl OIl Oil and more OIL!

If you dont have a safe a gun sock impregnated with silicone rust inhibitor works well.

Use the finest brass wool instead of steel. I don't remember why...just that's what to use (with oil).

Get a product called Barricade made by Birchwood Casey. It used to be called Sheath. You should be able to find it at most gun shops.

Is your gun Belgian-made?
Could be a dose of salt wood if it's rusting near the stock.
There are many resources to confirm this.
There are some that think Brownings are more rust-prone than other blued metals.

Yes it is Belgian made but it is not rusting by the stock.

I tried the steel wool and it took off the rust. I am waiting a few days to see if it returns after I steel wooled and oiled it.

I had that problem with my Browning 9mm.

My problem was I was wiping away the excess oil after the rubdown there by leaving the metal bare during storage.

use a silicon rag.
Leaves a residue behind.
