fNp,

Interesting post and video, unfortunately your link does not have the accompanying story. I had heard about the story. The link below has the article with the video. It is worth reading because it has some local connections and some insight into fisheries management.

Ichfish Story

What is particularly interesting is that the video implies that "ich" is relatively new and is a problem this year. The Yukon is colder this year than normal, "ich" may not be a problem. Reports are that the chinook run is late and may be small, the fishery at Tanana may not have started yet this year so the video is a probably a year or two old. IMO the reason for the article is not a new concern about "ich" but more a PR article to get a slice of the dwindling research fund pie. This is true of many of the stories related to fisheries that appear in the newspapers and on UTube.

You are correct. Salmonids can carry parasites and if those parasites are infected by ricketsial (sp) organism, they will most likely kill a dog if untreated within a week or two.

I don't know how common that orgnsim is in Alaska, but around here at least, do not ever feed your dog raw salmon or steelies. Some folks will say that they have fed their dogs raw salmonids with no prob, but it's a risk a dog lover should never take.
