I have been fishing hard since the opener with what I would call mixed success. I started out on opening evening hitting Lopez Island and got blown out. I prefer to fish the opposite tide at this particular spot but didnt get off work untill late and had no real choice. Didnt have any hits but I did manage to capture this at my favorite Winter time blackmouth destination on the way back to the barn.

Day two found me leaving work again a bit late and running over to Obstruction Pass. Found some fish and they were biting. We had 4 takedowns 3 that stuck but all three fish pulled the carpet out from under us and ran right back at the boat. I lost one, then Carol lost one and I finally got a 10 pounder when in a matter of minutes all hell broke loose. The weather went from calm and 5-10 mph winds to 30 mph and lightning. It was a hairy ride back to FH that night as the wind waves were a solid two feet coming at us and the storm was able to catch us even though I had opened up the HPDI 150. Wasnt able to get a pic that night, both of us were pretty shaken up when we got home.

Day three found us back at O pass and I was able to take another 10 pounder.

Fourth of July we fished hard all day and really struggled. Was able to hit this beast though!

Saturday, day five we slept in a bit and headed back over to O pass. We showed up to about 20 boats and made a few passes, it just wasnt happening so we boogied up to The Glory Hole just before the low slack. I was able to land this fish just under 15 right at slack tide.

Later that night after a long day I was able to get a nice shot of the sunset and my boat SLAYRIDE.

Yesterday was an absolute grind. Started out at Sucia, then to the Glory Hole, then to Eagle Bluff then wound up heading for town and a burger when we got a call from a buddy who had just landed this 26.2.

We grabbed a burger at Haley's and headed back out to continue with the grind. I hooked up about and hour after getting back on the water with a full grown who made me look like a (censored). Had him on for a couple minutes before he finally shook me off. It was nice to have a bite after a long day and finally hook up with a smoker but I have to say I was down in the mouth.

we tried to stay positive and ground it out untill dark.....I mean untill the beer was gone. I am laying low tonight but will be back at it hopefully tomorrow if I get some work done around the house tonight.

Hey A-Dog, Nice report, and that's some pretty decent fishing.

Hey I stay in Friday and Roche for a week each August and fish the outside of Henry Island, Lime Kiln, etc cause we are usually moored in RH. Can you please give a guy a few pointers on where to fish on that side of the island?

Sky-Guy,
that time of the summer you would probably want to concentrate your efforts at Eagle Point during the Ebb. A high slack at daylight or dark there can be good. The other spot I would reccomend would be Open Bay on the incoming. One of our PSA members and his wife popped a 45 pounder there last summer around the end of August. Lime Kiln and Pile Point can also be good. Dont be afraid to fish either very close to shore in these spots or way the hell offshore. You have to find pockets of fish. A couple years back they were all out in Haro Strait, last year nearer the island. Use your electronics and trust what you see. My 2 cents.

Just a reminder we have the summer long derby goin on right now as well. Another 26 pounder hit the deck yesterday morning. Top 3 fish are all over 20 at this point. We expect a fish in the upper 30's to take it so its a long long way from over.

Hi A-dog, I was in the c-dory fishing with my wife all weekend at the pass. we had to out run the rain and lighting that night. We ended up on the hook at blind bay that night for a hell of a light show. I have not fished the islands much in the past so decided to hit it hard this week. We fished Obstruction Pass the most, but also in front of fishermans bay. We had 4 take downs and 2 fish landed for 4 days worth of fishing. My wife got a 12 and I got a nice 13lber. I dont know why it took so long for us to get hooked up and why we did not do better. Many fish were caught all around us at the pass. One guy and his very pragnet wife hit three back to back right next to us. I did better at fishermans after going to a smaller size hoothie. That fish had nothing but small sand lance in him. What were they eating at Obstruction Pass? I will also be back up that way in august and was wandering if there are any other good spots on the inside to fish when the weather goes bad.?

I fished at Obstruction Pass on the 3rd and we picked one up around 15#'s. It was full of sand lance and also had about 4 inch squids in the stomach. We caught it on a plain glow hootchie with a green flasher. I have also heard that there are fish being picked up at Lawerence in the 20's along with a fish in the low 30's in the President's Channel area. If it was not for work I would be out there every day this week.

starcraft tom,
yeah i remember you guys! I heard from a buddy he saw you catch that fish at lopez. Thats how the San Juans are. You can get skunked two days in a row only to light up on day three. The fish are usually moving around a lot. All of the fish I have caught so far have been stuffed full of squid, most of them are about 3 inchers but one of those fish had a legit 6-7 inch squid in his belly like you would use for Halibut fishing. We did best on the candlefish imitations over there though. There is usually somewhere to fish in any conditions out of FH. Where are you planning on staying on your next trip? Let me know and I will try to point you in the right direction. Just so you know I think you did pretty good considering you dont fish the islands that much. I talked to lots and lots of boats who had not yet had a bite. I know several really good fishermen here who are still waiting for there first fish. Its not as good as the winter.

A-Dog, we always stay on the boat. We either tie up at blakely or the islander if we are not anchored out. I'm glad just to get fish but i have to keep doing it or the wife gets bored. she like's to catch not fish. I did notice that the same guy's showed up just before the tide change , which means I spent to much time fishing at the wrong time when I could have been taking a nap on the hook some where. Next time I come Up I will get ahold of you for a report.

Waterboy, I caught all my fish right on the bottom as did most folks I talked too.

I spent 3 of the last 4 days fishing open bay on an incoming ( because it was close to the cabin) and got skunked. yesterday I even mooched on the edge of hearing balls as far out as the channel and fished ripps off kellet bluff. Lots of bait and birds, nobody home for me.

Nice report! Keep em coming. Ill be back at Roche this weekend.
