Surprised it took this long to come out .. before 'Doc even started this thread a couple of weeks back, I had heard scuttlebutt from the big river that the fish was illegal. Gives us all a bad name ... WAY UNCOOL in my book frown

Interesting read throughout. I have a question, tho. How did the game dept. find out where the fish was actually caught? If it's stated in the article(s), I missed it. Do you know?

Wow good Thread!....I would have never believed it if someone told me 20 years ago that the salmon runs would end up being the way they are now!...And if someone caught a 73lbs King and it would be looked at in a way of a poor mistake to keep it!...But now look at the runs and how the salmon are going away and fast...Maybe my grandkids will have to turn on the discovery channel to see what a salmon looks like in the future!..If I caught that fish yesterday I would of kept it and called all my friends and send pics of it to everyone I know and even drove it around town to show it off but after reading this thread I see the light so to speak and understand what most of you are saying that it was such a shame to see a fish like that caught and not able to spawn its off spring. I was thinking last night laying in bed that the silver run in the Snoho is fading away and the few silvers that I have caught so far maybe should have been released to spawn for the future!.....Good Post Doc!.....

WHAT A JOKE.
How much ya think the folks on this board have invested in search of a fish like that. What is the real value of a fish like that.
Hey Doc how much do you have invested for every one you have caught over 70lbs. Please don't answer that or even think about it.
They should have just hung the SOB from the Bridge.
I can't begin to imagin what that fish is worth to Soldatna

It may be a BIG river, but it's still the most heavily fished piece of water in the entire state.

There are LOTS of eyes to witness what does and does NOT happen on the Kenai.

In this case, it was the fact that nobody that day witnessed a fish of that caliber caught anywhere close to "Honeymooners" (Honeymoon Cove) where/when the fish was allegedly caught.

The offending guide was known to spend lots of time fishing above the bridge where the slot limit was still in effect.

In his heart of hearts, I'm sure he was convinced he had a legally bonkable NON-slot fish exceeding 55" in length when he decided to heave that beast over the gunnel. Too bad he never learned how to measure very accurately. When it comes to fish size, I think it's inbred in most guys to exaggerate, but obviously that doesn't cut it in the legal world of fishing.

It felt like there was *ALWAYS* 100+ pairs of eyes watching Docs every move on the Kenai when we were up there.

Even think of doing something illegal up there and it's almost guaranteed you'll get turned in.

Not saying we were doing anything illegal, but as one of the few boats that practiced C&R, we got a lot (and I mean a lot) of looks on the river.

Had even one of those fish even come 1mm fully out of the water and we didn't bonk it, someone would have turned us in. Guaranteed. Pretty ironic and messed up considering 85% of every boated fish is whacked on that river.

I just gotta figure out how to get back on Doc's "Short List" for 2010....

Damn, that was an awesome trip! thumbs Oh wait, I mean it sucked and you all should just ignore Doc and never go up there... Ever! wink

Well that list is pretty short for 2010... already promised out to two guys who shall remain nameless on this board... well, at least till I post the first installment of Team KeenEye 2010.
