We trolled between President Point and the ferry in Kingston on Friday. Windy as hell and rougher than shi%. Hooked one big salmon that got tangled in the downrigger cable and left with my gear and about 50 yards of mono. Never got it close enough to see if it was a keeper or not.

I hate it when that happens!

I dig the rod/reel combo in your avatar Hatch, aren't they a blast compared to the old 6' bamboo stick and Penn Senator?

Kings are not showing in usual ammounts in area 11 yet, I fished every day since thursday at 3tree, beals, and dolfin with only 2 kills and 3 releases.
Lots of shakers at beals, kind of made for tough fishen. People picked up a couple out in deeper water (180'). but I normally get limits every day in previous years in 90-120' depth at 70'.
from the sound of your posts their will be some coming my way.
I always take the first 2 weeks of august off, but went back to work monday
to save for when they do show

My struggles still continue with none in the box but I'm getting closer......

I went from getting nothing whatsoever to catching shakers and a couple of 20-26"'rs that I released. I also lost a nice toad at the boat Saturday. I even cought a silly little Sock on a Cayote spoon???

Back at it tomorrow thru the weekend!

Thanks NOFISH, there's something to be said for old school simple. I still have a few bamboo rods and a box of 109/209 Penns along with some old Pflueger Sal-Trouts. I'll stick with the Moocher Plus and the graphite though, hopefully they'll get their share of abuse next week in 9 and 10.

I loved my old direct drive Penn 109 ms. I never used the drag, always just thumbed it. Great mooching reel but it became increasingly more difficult to get replacement parts for it so I broke down and started expeimenting with reels till I settled on the Tekota 500. Next reel will probably be an Islander though.-

I agree Tom, the 109's were great. I think I still have my old mooching set-up from back in the 80's. A 109 connect to a fiberglass Eagle Claw Ocean Granger rod. I caught a lot of fish at Pt Defiance on that set-up.

Throw that reel on a canadial style mooching rod and it is even more fun! The long foregrip makes them alot easier to handle.

4 days on the water with only silvers to show for it, but I'm finally on the board with a king... Picked up this lady on Monday AM around PnP. 21lbs on the scale, a personal best for me in Puget Sound... And thanks to Summerrun for forgetting his white lightning coho killer on FishRangers boat, so I could use it to catch her! Like Hatch and others, single action Daiwa M-One reel--the only way to go!

Special thanks to FishRanger for the ride!!

I have been watching this thread since it started but didn't have much to add. I have been trying to fish 4 days a week, Monday - Thursday for a few hours every morning in Area 10. Our catch rate has been one king for every 20 hours of fishing. The last two days that has changed, fishing alone yesterday and today I managed an 18# yesterday and a 20+ # and lost another good one today at West Pt. A couple of observations, the fish I caught were all larger than what I normally expect, 18, 19 and 20 pounds and every one of them had nothing in their stomach. It seems that they are not feeding in Area 10, maybe they spent time feeding in the ocean, the North Pacific has been colder than normal and coastal ocean conditions have been very productive this summer. I haven't seen many silvers in area 10, in the past years when silvers seemed to be everywhere good numbers of kings were mixed in with them. I think good numbers of kings are going to show in area 10 soon. I heard the WDFW test boat on the radio today, they had a good morning at Kingston for kings and a lot of nice silvers and Addicted's post about his silver success makes me think that they are moving south. Area 9 will probably close soon for kings so even more will be available to move south. I think the next week will be good in area 10.

Parker: Yea, I saw Ryley's Islander (complete with neoprene case, grin) and it's pretty darn sweet. I'm too cheap to buy one, but it's drool-worthy...

Summerrun: Yep, I was a good boy, and left it on the boat for you. I did upgrade from the stock hook to a 2/0 rvrfshr sickle siwash tho. Brought home the big girl on that hook (plug for Todd & Joe!)
