The popular Edmonds Coho Derby is coming soon on Saturday September 6th. This year we have added a new weigh in station in Everett at Bayside. This will make it possible for many more people to participate and try for the top cash prize of $5000. Tickets are already on sale and are selling well. This event is the final stop on the Northwest Salmon Derby Series and $85,000 worth of boats will be given away.

Go to: http://www.edmondscohoderby.com for all the details including where to buy tickets...this event will sell out so don't wait

I look forward to this derby every year.

It will be interesting to see if the new Area 9 clipped Coho regulation will affect the derby.

I really like the second weigh in station at Bayside in Everett. Great move guys.

Oh darn the secret is out....

speaking of the new area 9 rule....I spent some time working with a WDFW official to try to get the boundaries changed. I doubt the negotiations will end up changing anything but maybe some enforcement things. One thing we decided to do is allow ALL Coho to be weighed in fin or not. No way for any derby to police such a ill-conceived regulation. Area 9 is surrounded by areas 10 and 8-2 which allow Coho with fins to be retained. So if you are fighting a Coho at the boundary between those areas you will drift into either 8-2 or 10 and land the fish....It will be up to the individual angler and WDFW to worry about the rule. It is especially stupid considering this new rule was decided by tribal fiat and no discussion involving sports anglers at all....except Gary Krein after the NOF negotiations were over. The rule is supposed to make up for overharvest in Hood Canal. One guess who overharvests Coho in Hood Canal and under reports. And guess who gets to keep doing so this year while area 9 sports anglers get to release unclipped Coho in area 9?

I agree.....it is the oddest rule I have seen in a long time.

I know that the rule was implemented, without open discussion.

When it was announced, Gary went ballistic that this was "negotiated" without actually negotiating in open discussion.

Really makes you wonder.............

I really think they should split Area 9, much in the same way 8-1 & 8-2 are.

This would allow for "better management" and the ability to avoid such stupid results as what we have this year.

Oh well.

Can't wait for the derby.

WDFW is not likely to split area 9 which would make too much sense. They split it for commercial fishing. Even a line from Possession Point to Kingston as Gary advocated would allow much smoother Coho fishing and still protect Hood Canal Coho....

No matter....We have tons of area to fish for the derby.

New This Year
A Weigh In Station at Bayside Marine Next To The Public Launch

Weigh In deadline is 2:00PM sharp. You must be in line to weigh in your fish by 2:00Pm . 2:01PM is too late.
All guts, gills, kidney (the blood next to the spine) must be removed before weighing fish. Derby judges may do additional cleaning at their complete discretion before wieghing. Clean your fish before arriving at either weigh in station.Guts, gills and kidney (the blood next to the spine) must be removed before weighing fish. Derby judges may do additional cleaning at their complete discretion before weighing. Clean your fish before arriving at either weigh-in station.
After you have your boat on your trailer, look for a derby official in a distinctive T shirt. He will tell you the best place to park while weighing your fish.
If no ifficial is available , turn right (South) just past the "Equator" ( the old rotten boat under the roof) toward Bayside Marine.
Places to park while weighing your fish: in the tie down area near the boat ramp; turn right just short of the gate into Bayside and pull over; drive into Bayside Maring and park to the right of the weigh in station; park in the large boat parking lot at the launch. Please leave the area immediately after wieghing in your fish so others can get in line.
If at all possible please remove your trailer before leaving for the Edmonds Derby Headquarters for the final ceremonies as there is very limited parking there. You will have two hours between weigh in and the ceremony in Edmonds which starts at 4:30PM

IMPORTANT:

The following people bought derby tickets at Boater's World in Bellevue and were given the wrong end of their ticket:

Mike Allred....#0670
Dave Boberg...#0671
Mickey Pease...#0672
Jack Breeze...#0673
Randy Antonio..#0674
Trinity Antonio..#0675

You all need to go back to Boater's World Bellevue and give them the large end of your ticket and exchange it for the small stub which is your proof of purchase and will be needed to weigh in a fish and/or win a prize.

If anyone knows these people please pass this along to them

Got my 4 tickets today at Boaters World Bellevue for me and the crew. Got the right end unlike above. I am bringing the lucky wife.

Next Year, you can tie up in Edmonds, get your fish weighed and hang around for the ceremonies then take off. Shouldn't be a problem. Be prepared to raft up though. Might not be as bad this year because fish can be weighed in Everett and there is temp moorage available there too.

Lots of people tie up in the Edmonds Marina during the ceremony but as Mike said it is a popular marina..especially on derby day. Contact the Port of Edmonds and they can set you up with a slip outside of the guest moorage area if you act now.

Mike...I talked to the folks at Boaters World Bellevue and faxed them some more complete instructions . I am glad they got you set up right.

Breaking news:

The Port of Edmonds and City of Edmonds with the cooperation of the Edmonds Police Dept have agreed to waive the 3 hour limit for street parking on Admiralty Way the day of the derby only..that means parking along the street outside the Edmonds Marina will be available all day. Boats that launch at the Port of Edmonds will be able to park in the large gravel lot. The lot is usually reserved for trailers only but those who launch at Edmonds will be able to keep their boats on their trailers and still park in this lot during the awards ceremonies. Weigh in ends at 2pm and the big grand finale ceremony gets underway at 4pm...this delay will allow derby particiapants weighing in at the Bayside Marine facility in Everett to get to the ceremony in time. Many of those who do launch in Everett will have time to take their boats home if they choose and travel by car to Edmonds for the festivities after weighing in their fish.

What Spud said.....in the past few years with the weigh in exclusively at Edmonds we still didn't start ceremonies until 3:00PM or so. We also have the two boats to give away which takes some additional time but I would say that is going to be worth the wait. Our derby participants have a better than ever chance to win this year.

Amazingly few coho being caught in puget sound this year. Check out last week.

http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/creel/puget/aug25-31-2008/central.html

For that matter, only this week did they start getting about 1 coho/person out at CQ.

It took a couple months to fill a tiny 2000 coho quota out in area 4.

Odd.

I know of one 13LB fish that was caught the other day. Honestly, regardless of the reports, we are all on a level playing field as far as what is available out there. Me, I am out there for the fun.
