Scientists report non-native fish threat to salmon
A panel of scientists has advised letting anglers catch more shad, smallmouth bass and walleye in the Columbia and Snake rivers to help out wild salmon.

The reason is that hydroelectric dams have turned the rivers into a series of lakes where non-native fish have an advantage. Those fish eat a lot of baby salmon, compete with salmon for food and pass on disease.

But the head of fisheries for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says not enough people fish for these species to make much difference.... Continued@URL... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/371693_salmon22.html?source=rss

Perhaps ODFW and WDFW will remove all limits on nonnatice fish species.
Or perhaps a BPA type bounty would be in order.

I think ODFW has taken action, in some waters, against the non-natives. Who is interested in getting rid of the bass, catfish, and walleye in the Columbia and other systems (Lake Washigton/Sammamish, for example) where they compete with natives?
