My family had a 1st annual fishing derby this past weekend in areas 9 and 10. The fishing derby is in honor of my grandfather. He was a supreme hardcore fisherman.
He won a car in the 1940 cracker fishing derby with a 15pd silver at 29 yrs old.
My uncles told stories of how he would take a 6hp little boat out 2 1/2 hours into the straights, westport, neahbay, near tatoosh or past and many other places. He would then row all day with 12inch spinner cut herring.
In the 70's he stopped fishing because there were no more fish. No one sold his herring anymore, he liked it because he got to pieces of bait with one herring. He would only use 2oz banana weight, 3oz if it was rough. He was also mad that people were using new fancy equipment and bait, especially the new small cut plug herring.
My uncle finally got him back into fishing, all it took was one blackmouth and the passion returned. Anyways enough talk.
The saturday was tough, at the time my brother had the only fish out of 42 boats checked at Kingston. It was 16 pounds
The tail got cut in the picture when I downloaded it
We then had a family BBQ
This is my grandma, she was in sixth grade and my grandfather was a senior whenshe saw him pitch. He pitched for the pilots and was going pro but his parents told him he couldn't and get a real job. He started an oil business in West Seattle. As your about to go over the west seattle bridge his buiding now has a coffee shop in it. The story goes that he bought all or part of Alki point for $5000 with a friend a looooong time ago. A couple years later someone wanted it and gave him $10,000. At the time it was a good deal.
Sunday morning was much better weather and the fishing picked up a little for some of us. The winner was 22pds, although a high 20's was released in part of a double header, there were 2 dbles that day
Here is another 16 for my brother
here is one dbl
here is the other
couple of the vessels, someone might recognize the olympic, my uncle fishes constantly in the summer
and the winning fish
here are a couple morning sun shots
All in all it was a great time even though the fishing was subpar. Now go easy on me with the pic quality, its my first digital camera and not everyone there knew how to hold a fish for a quality picture.
