Wow. That is all I have to say about this economical steak. $5.00/lb at the McCleary grocery store, probably less at a larger store. I thought I'd try a flyer on one, just because it is good to do that once in a while.

From the looks of it in the package, I couldn't tell if it was gristle or marbling, but $10 for 2 lbs of steak was worth the gamble. I beat the thing senseless, just to make sure it was tender, and it was VERY nice with no connective tissues whatsoever.

Anyway, if you are looking for a nice steak, but don't want to spend $7-10 per lb, give it a go. (Mine came from St. Helen's Beef.)

Thanks for the info, I've long suspected you were a meat-beater.

Try chuck eye, if you can find them. Edit: Come to think of it, flat iron just might be a chuck eye cut half inch thick.

Nope, just Johny's on the grill. It would be suitable for doing a london broil.

Best Flat Iron steak I ever had was last year I picked up a 3 pack at the Grocer in Kooskia, ID to take back to camp and grill up.

You're right. they are good.

I tried them a couple times, and they are fairly tender and tasty. But since I don't have teenagers at home, my grocery bill isn't that big a part of my cost of living. So I just buy rib steaks and NY strips, which are tenderer and more tasty.

Probably a good idea for Andy, whose sons will soon turn in to full time eating machines, stopping periodically just to catch their breath.

More tender. OK already!

Glad I don't have to support your munchie habit.

I tracked my grocery spending a few years ago to see what my budget, if you could call it that, looked like. When I saw that wine was 75% of my food bill I decided to not keep track of it any more. Makes beer seem reasonably priced. Not to mention the above mentioned steaks.

Ummm, steak. It's what's for dinner.
